Hello all,

Every now and again the transmission in my 1997 with 84K miles acts up a little. Basically, when accelerating from a stop with the shifter in "D" (but before moving at all) the engine will rev up, but the truck won't move. About 1 second later, the trans. catches and the truck takes off as normal. No other problems like missed shifts, clutch slippage while driving, etc. have been noticed/experienced. Any ideas?

Thanks

Ryan

just to be clear, does this happen everytime you stop the truck, say at a stop sign, or only when you start the engine after being shot off for a time? My 47RH will take about 2 to 4 seconds to move after it has been sitting overnight, but after it starts moving, all is well. It has something to do with a bad check valve, & the fluid drains out of the torque coverter or valve body when the engine is not running. I was told that this is not normal, but will have no real long term effects on transmission life. If it happens everytime you pull up to a stop sign, then I have no idea what can cause it. P.

Yup, you pretty much pegged it! It only happens after the truck has been sitting for a while, but not every time after its been sitting. Never happens on the road after driving around for a while. What/where is the defective check valve and was there a TSB on it?

Thanks

Ryan

Not a defective check valve. Torque Flite transmissions are like that. My Dad's '63 Plymouth muscle car did that. My '77 Dodge van did that. My '95 CTD does that. The torque convertor drains after it sits for a while. A few seconds of idle in N will fill it for the rest of the day. There have been check valves used to try to stop this behavior because of complaints. No big deal.

That normal for that trans.

That normal for the Dodge automatic. In cold weather It wont shift In overdrive until trans oil reaches 180 dregress also.

I agree, that is normal for the torqueflite trans. I think all the performance Valve Bodies have a custom manual valve that allows the trans to fill the converter in park, but a few seconds in neutral on a stocker will help out that delay you feel after sitting.

Hi Guys, long time no talk to.

I have been having problems with my truck shifting into OD in the cold weather. It would normally shift about 45 - 50mph. The last few days, the mercury has dipped to 0 degrees. The first OD shift when the truck is cold has to be run up over 62 mph or better to get the shift. So this is a normal problem and nothing to worry about?

My transmission did the same thing until

I took It to Dave out IN Iowa and he rebuilt It and change the toutque converter,WOW what a difference even got more power. The Dodge takes off like It should with no hesitation at all. The overdrive act different now shift into overdrive right now. I love It. Now I have not drove It IN extream cold weather to see how the overdrive shift In cold weather. Now I got a smile on my face now driving my Dodge. :D
