I took my truck in for the 1-2-1-2 shift problem. 58,000miles. The dealer says it needs rebuilding... 1st & 2nd clutch pacs are worn??? My trans towed great except under light acceleration(hunting between 1 & 2). Are they just soaking dodge??

I know very little about the mysteries of an automatic transmission so my opinion is worth very little. What I have read many times from TDR members who seem to know is that the problem is common to the 48RE transmission and is often caused by a part with a name with the word "governor" in it. I would hold off on a decision to allow the Dodge dealer to practice on it until I heard from TDR members who are familiar with the problem. The fix may be a $50 part and little or no labor.

I'm not sure what you meant by "just soaking Dodge?" Your truck warranty is 36mo/36k miles unless you're talking about an extended warranty. An extended warrantyy would not cover worn clutch pacs. Warranties pay for parts that fail during the warranty period, not parts that "wear" during the warranty period.

Be careful, they may be planning to soak you!

The hunting problem is usually the governor and pressure transducer. I have gone thru 2 sets so far with only 75k on the truck.

If you towed quite a bit, its possible. Stock pressures caused the directs to slip frequently. Forwards were not as bad but if it was leaking pressure somewhere is entirely possible. If they are gonna warranty it have them do it, then, when they get it done get a shift kit into it and will last much longer under stock power and towing.

Ask them to show the clutch disks to you when they rebuild it. I bet you can still read part numbers that are inked on them. If anything is worn, it will be the front band and drum. How is the fluid color and condition?

Its under warranty 7/70. They worked on it at 38K they did the TSB fix and it still shifted the same. I have a little more than 4k towing my 33' 5th wheel camper.

if you are mechanically inclined, like have the ability to drain oil and change a spark plug/oil filter etc. I would first adjust the front band. IIRC you need a 3/4" wrench and #30 torx. basically the torque settings have the torx screw about hand tight against the band. SO EASY.

Second would be to replace the governor solenoid and while there since you need the pan off do a rear band adjustment.

If you have never had the bands adjusted before, it may be too late though.

this was worded a bit unclear.
