Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) transmission removal?

What the best way to do the NV4500 and transfer case? As a unit or separate. I have done a few dump truck trannies but not with transfer cases and jeeps are just not a comparrison. (too small) Is there anything I should look at with it out. Shifts good but truck as 181K total 81k bombed. 5th gear nut taken care of but I shift alot and was wondering about syncros or 5th gear berring? Thanks guys.

I have pulled mine both ways. I have the "round" style shifter rather than the square one. The transmission has to twist and tilt back to clear the floor. (At least it used to until I performed surgury on the floor, just like the good old days) Real tough to get back in with the extra mass and weight of the transfer case. The last time was when I pulled it as one unit but had to split it anyway to get it out from underneath my truck do to clearance.



By the way, when you take the cross member out, slide it to the rear and it will drop right out. I know of people trying to drop it straight down.

when i did mine (twice) i took them apart.



mine was a 2001 and the shifter came out with just four bolts on the top of the gear box. I just took it out and duct taped the hole to keep the debris out.

If you are on a lift or have a really good transmission jack leave them together. If you don't have a really good transmission jack then seperate them. If you experience clearance problems getting the transmission to clear the pan, don't performe surgery on the truck. Just put a jack under the balancer at the front of the engine and lift the front of the engine about one inch this will give you plenty of clearance to get the transmission out.

Crossmember

Quick note on the cross member. The frame it bolts to is tapered from top to bottom and the cross member is wedged vertically downward to tighen it against the frame. To remove, whack it upward with a hammer and slide it back and it will drop out.
