Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) transmission shift prob.

My dad just bought an '02 4x4 AT. The problem is the transmission starts off in 2nd gear. If I pull it down into 1st it takes off fine, If I leave it in drive it starts off in 2nd. It will not downshift into 1st untill I manually pull it down, and then only when it reaches 5mph. We just reset the apps. No change. The codes it shows are ecu 0523 and 0522. The previous owner did have a chip in the truck, but pulled it befor sale. Truck is all stock with 28K miles. Thanks, Jeff

One of the solenoids located on the valvebody is bad remove transmission pan and unbolt valvebody replace them all if you don't have means of testing them it's better to replace them all at once then to have to do it again. You can pickup parts at local Dodge dealership. I had the same exact problem about a year ago. When you refill transmission use a synthetic trans fluid by amsoil you will notice improvement in shifting Good Luck

Thanks for the info. Pops opted for the dealer fix. Bad shift solenoids and scorched fluid. Valve body was OK. Works as good as new The tab was 7 bills and some change :--), but he's happy. Merry Christmas
