Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Interesting LP failure mode

This just started not to long ago but ussally no matter when (warm or cold) the truck will not shift outa second into third. Unless i get on the throttle hard enough to accelerate to 35 or 40, or run it up to 30 and let off completly and then it drops in. But when I'm in town obviously i can't do that in certain places ie: 25mph speed limit, so I end up stayin in second around town. But now when I'm just driving around 20 through 30ish the transmission dissengauges and seems to freewheel but maintains speed. Then I get back into the throttle then it re-engauges into second after a couple 100 rpms higher or more of imput from my foot. This scares the hell outa me, cause I cannot afford to be dropping 3k into a new transmission at this point in my life. But boy I sure would if i could, but such is life. Anyways any info ideas and insight into what may be going on will be very much greatly appreciated!!! Oo.

A hanging 2-3 shift wouldn't be a band issue. 2nd gear is a holding member, using the band. If it was loose, he wouldn't have a solid second gear. It honestly sounds like a shift solonoid issue to me.

the second gear to third gear shift lever is broken in the transmission. I have broken two of them and bought an after market lever from the guy mentioned in an earlier reply to you in Iowa and havent broken one since... .

I haven't got a clue what wb6tkr is talking about, but there is no 2nd to 3rd shift lever in a 47RE trans. There is a 2nd gear band lever and low/reverse band lever tho. The governor pressure solenoid and /or governor pressure transducer (sensor) is what is causing you trans not to shift properly. There is a good chance there is a DTC in the PCM for this but sometime there is not. They are common to fail and is best to replaced at the same timedue to being hard to diagnois which part has failed. Should cost about $200 for both at the dealer and are easy to replace. Just drop the pan and they are on the valve body. All you will need is a 7/16 socket and ratchet and T 25 torx driver. They fail usually due to debris comming mostly from the lock-up clutch in the torque converter wearing. I would suggest dropping the valve body down while you are there and drilling the boost valve plate on top of the valve body to increase the holding power of your converter lock-up clutch. The line pressure should be bumped up a little too. This will help the rest of the transmission survive as well. PM me if you would like to know more about doing this.

first step is to check the govenor pressure either through a scanner or a wet gauge hooked to a port on right side of transmission. One psi for every mile an hour.

Again, I will tell you that I had the same problem with my transmission and contacted Ray Torresdal Co. In Ossian, Iowa and he told me that the kick down lever was broken and I bought a hardened lever and have not had any problems since. You can contact him at ritco@acegroup. cc ..... Anyway, that was the problem, twice, in my transmission... . His number is 563-5329884
