Does anyone know of a good transmission shop within an hour of Memphis?

I'm looking to upgrade my 48RE, but driving half way across the state, getting a transmission put in, and driving half way back doesn't make me feel all warm & fuzzy.

I know you don't have a warm fuzzy about driving across your state but I drove from Huntsville AL to Chips Transmission in Severville, TN to get my DTT installed. About 100 miles out my 47re started acting up. I was glad when I arrived. It took Chips 1/2 day to install the new transmission. Been very happy and they are good bunch of guys to work with up there. The only thing I had to do after is replace my kickdown cable as it was ratched.

Hmmm... you're starting to temp me.

If I may ask, how much was the total cost of transmission & installation, and how do you like the DTT transmission as far as the smoothness of driving it, power delivery, etc.

And my biggest worry:

#1 If I break down on the way back to Memphis, will these guys warranty the work and fix it if I have it towed back?

#2 If I get to Memphis and later on down the line it breaks or needs rebuilding, can a normal transmission shop fix it?

The total cost of the transmission was around 4500 with the billet input shaft, Billet 3 gear drum. Labor was $600. You have to understand mine was shot. I had 93k miles on it and I had some mild Bombs on it. Your situation will be different and most likely cheaper as yours in a new truck with low miles. I did a whole swap and DTT shipped the transmission to them. They were the closest DTT shop to me. I would call DTT to see if they have a closer one to you in Memphis. You may find something in Arkansas or Mississippi. The other option is to have DTT ship the parts and they rebuild your existing transmission. This is cheaper on the parts end but you will pay more in labor. Chips does either way you want.

1. DTT warrentee's their transmission and their certified installers. I have not had any problems but there are plenty of posts on here about their customer service. I am sure if you broke down that they would work something out with you.

2. I am sure a normal transmission shop could fix your transmission, however this will void your warrantee you have with DTT. In somecases you my be able to have another shop work on your transmission as long as Bill approves.

I like my new transmission. It shifts a little rougher than the stock one does but they have a ton of different converters to chose from. They will walk you through the process and help you decide what TC works best for you application. In my case I got one suited to tow our three horse slant. You will definitly know when the transmission shifts especially at WOT. It will push you back in your seat as you take off on every gear.

Another good option would be from ATS, Suncoast or Gorand Brothers. There are a bunch of threads out there to read on each. Some get heated. Do your research call a couple and ask questions. At the end go with who you feel most comfortable with. I don't think you can really go wrong with any of them. They all are better than stock. Just my . 02.
