when it slips in the lockup is when it causes the damage, it causes over heating and can warp causing trans. shutter. And then its just a matter of time before its gone.

The TC is not supposed to slip once it is locked/engaged. If your 3rd-Reverse or Overdrive clutch packs are shot & slipping... you got problems! As in Truck-Won't-Go-Nowhere problems! But a slipping TC can be babied along for awhile, I babied my truck for about 6 months before I had ATS rebuild the trans. The problem with babying it along is that as the TC slips in lock-up it is rubbing/breaking/melting off little parts of clutch material & adhesive which ends up circulating though the trans and causing more problems.

The stock clutch material is a cellulose product like paper. Now they make some pretty tough paper products nowadays, and as I say, it actually isn't too bad. The glue used to attach it is not the best, and I have seen TC clutches which failed due to adhesive failure. But mine lasted 100,000 miles most of it bombed. The trouble occurs, as we are all well aware, when you Bomb or Tow or both.

I don't know about other trans builders, but ATS uses a Raybestos Kevlar/Carbon/Cellulose clutch material and they attach it with a pretty tough adhesive. Their clutches will not slip, burn, break, melt, or separate, but that is also because there are 3 of them to absorb the torque and not just 1.

Well, here is why I ask...

I have an EZ and with no other mods. When the TC is not locked, the truck seems to be sluggish when laying into the go-pedal. When the TC is locked, the truck really takes off.

Is this a normal feeling, or is my transmission slipping???

Stock converter, its normal. Welcome to the wonders of the stock torque converter ;) Lock up is lock up regardless of whose transmission you have, whether it slips is another story.

Torque this, the feeling you describe is totally normal. It is sluggish becasue your power is being turned into heat, wasted by the transmission. It cannot transfer the power when it is in fluid coupling,as soon as you get lockup,it pulls hard since you now are transfering 100% of the power(until you start to slip the lockup clutch). if you want it to last, bombed with a stock transmission, you should stay out of the throttle when it is in lockup, below 2000RPPM's,This is where you can hurt it. if your going to roll on the throttle in lockup dont ease into it,once the turbo starts to spool, and its starts pulling hard, stomp it to the floor, this gets your line pressures higher, since rolling on provides almost full torque anyway, even at part throttle, your better off with the throttle to the floor. Dont even bother adding the dd1's without at least putting in a VB,you will fry the stock lockup with the dd1's and EZ. You know what to do next, and who to call, once you get the funds.

Yes. You are describing the effects of the stock fluid coupling, (which includes the stator), while the TC is unlocked. The stator is a fan-shaped part of the TC which gooses up the transferred power in non-lock-up. I cursed that slushy, sluggish feeling for years. The answer, (in non-lock-up), is a different stator design. DTT offers a killer stator, according to all reports. I don't know about BD or Goerend, as I have the ATS Stage IV trans. And their stator is also a real doosey. My truck GETS UP & GOES now, in non-lock-up instead of just making a lot of noise until lock-up. I can beat those black Ford Expeditions and the Lexus SUV's now!:D (I could always beat them in lockup, but now I can beat them off the line! Ohhhhh those Yuppies HATE to be beaten by a PICKUP flying the American Flag!:D
