I am experiencing an automatic transmission problem with my 04 Ram 2500 diesel. At 65 MPH it appears to slip out of overdrive. The RPMs go up and the truck slows down. Lifting off the gas pedal gets it back into overdrive. The dealer cannot reproduce the problem (of course). However, in November of last year the dealer received a service advisory about the transmission and during the scheduled transmission filter change performed some sort of fix. This worked for about a month. There is a work around you can do to stop it. Set the cruise control at 60MPH and use it to get up to 65. The problem does not occur.
A member of TDR told me that this problem was discussed in this forum. He said that the bands are not set tight enough. This was done at the factory to promote "smooth shifting" and that causes the problem and will also lead to a premature wear out of the transmission.
Is there anyone with some help out there? BTW the problem started around 30,000 miles and I now have 45,000 miles on the truck. Also, I am not a mechanic, so any answer has to be understandable by a layman.
Thanks
Ken
