My transmission started slipping last week at around 92,000 miles. It seems to do it under moderate-heavy acceleration around 2,000-2,800 rpms or so. I think once the torque converter locks up, it stops slipping. I'm assuming it's the torque converter, but as the transmission is at it's 30K mile oil change, I'm wondering if the bands just need adjusting (I adjusted at 30k and 60k). Can anyone tell me if I'm on the right track? Also, as I'm in Florida, I'm thinking Suncoast is the place for me to go to get the transmission upgraded.

Can anyone recommend what upgrades I should consider. I don't have plans for any mods in the near future, other than maybe a smarty to replace the bully dog. Approximate cost diy vs having installed?

Both bands are relaxed when the converter clutch is applied.

most likel it is the converter clutch, but I'd also suspect the front clutch.

converter clutch and front clutch? I assume these are internal parts of the torque converter.

No, the converter clutch is just that, in the converter. It gets damaged from internal leakage--not enough pressure to keep it applied.

The front clutch is also called 3rd gear-or direct. It is the clutch assembly closest to the converter, but actually in the case behind the pump. It is damaged too because of internal leaks which lower the applied pressure.

After rereading your post, tell us what gear the trans is in when you notice the slipping.

you may simply be noticing the converter, in fluid coupling, slipping. ( they are far too loose).

fox, thanks for your responses, I know very little about transmissions, so please bear with me. I'll take a video tonight or tomorrow of the speedometer/tach while launching at 1/4, 1/2 and full throttle to illustrate what's happening.

It seems to take off from a stop fine and accelerate hard (it will break the tires loose), until it hits around 2000 rpm. then it starts slipping, and depending on how hard my foots in the throttle, the rpms will jump into the 3000+ rpm range, as much as 3400 rpms until i back out of it, it's almost like it's between gears? After a short period of over-revving, a couple seconds maybe, if I stay easy on the throttle the transmission will engage (torque converter locking up?) and I can put the pedal to the floor again without slippage. My guess is it's first or second gear, I can 't tell.

It could be the front band or the direct clutch pack, its hard to tell unless you can figure out which gear it is when you notice the flare shift. Stock, the trans tended to do that anyway due to the lack of line pressure and just the shift timing.

Your not going to hit 3000-3400 with just part throttle operation either so not quite sure how you are getting that much rpm if all you are doing is 1/2 throttle.

Thanks everyone for the help. I finally got under the truck tonight and adjusted the front band, and all seems good. Considering I can't help myself but leave my chip on the high setting, and I love to step on it, I know I'm asking for trouble and should really consider some upgrades, but I can't afford to now, so hopefully she'll hold together until I do have the cash.
