Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) What is this stuff?

Hey guys. So my friend just bought a 96 cummins a couple months ago and it has a new transmission. Id say the transmission has about 15000 miles on it. Now the truck is having a problem. It wont shift out of 3rd gear and it will only shift down to 2nd not 1st when shifted manually. So we replaced the solinoid pressure sensor and transducer sensor and it is still doing the same thing. Any thoughts? Thanks

Mine's been behaving similarly for some years. Sometimes it works well, sometimes it doesn't. Sometime a hard jounce causes it, sometimes salty slush or rain causes it, sometimes even a sudden, hard yank on teh steering wheel does it.

Sometimes it kind-of stays in 1st (doesn't 'hold back' like first usually does). And it usually will upshift once I reach 25-30 MPH in 1st.

Today it just started staying in 3rd. Fortunately, the ATS TC has just enough slip to allow boost to build up; the unladen truck accelerates OK from a stop, but it takes 25# boost.

I suspect an electrical connection on the trans is loose. Or maybe a power lead to it is broken (or is breaking). I haven't had time to look at it.

have you hooked a scan tool to the truck to read fault codes? this might help some...the OP symptom does sound like limp home mode...which is usually the transducer and or solenoid... it could be a wiring problem or something else... checking fault codes would be a good starting point

take care
