i was driving at 60 on the freeway when the transmission suddenly lost drive. . any thoughts on what may have gone wrong. .

symptoms no forward or reverse

as if it shifted into neutral

drive shaft doesnt rotate when i put it into gear

no noises

just a sudden shift to neutral

90,000 miles

1997 diesel automatic

running amsoil synthetic

fluid still clean . . no smell

Check the simple things first.

Check the ATF level in the trans, make sure you didn't break a line and dump the fluid on the freeway.

Then, make sure the shift lever is moving the linkage on the trans. Do you still feel the detents for the lever positions??

If you put the shift lever in Park, is it in Park?? IF not, check to see that the Transfer case is not in neutral assuming it is a 4x4.

If it is full of ATF, still goes into park when selected, and the ATF is clean, It sounds like the input shaft is broken.

Hope this helps, Greg L

i had this happen to me only i was getting on the highway. it was like it went to nuetral. turned out that the torque convertor went and needless to say i needed not only a new tq conv. but a rebuild on the whole transmission due to metal shavings.
