I need to get a transmission temp. gauge installed in the San Diego area. I've called around and have gotten some outrageous and inconsistent quotes. The Cummins shop said 5 hrs. labor. If I supply the gauge and pillar, what is a reasonable price for this job? How many hours are required?

And, if any of you are local, where would a good place be to get it done?

Thanks

Temp. gauge install

The best way to save some money and make sure the job is done right is to install it yourself or get help from a friend. Maybe you can even find another TDR member in your area to help out. We can also provide you with install instructions if you want to contact us.

I used the SRT-10 pilar and Di-Pricol temp gauge. It took less than 2 hours start to finish. Thats me taking my time. Any shop should be able to do the same for a 2hr flat rate.

I do have the Mag-Hytec pan which is drilled and tapped for 1/8npt sending unit. Some have put their sending unit in one of the test ports on the side of the valve body. Maybe one of those guys will chime in with a photo to show which port to use.

I called the local cummins place and the guy quoted med 5 hours to install a transmission temperature gauge. Hard to find places that will do it, but no way does this job take 5 hours.

I put the probe in a test port in the side of the trans, there is a picture in my reader rig, there is also a picture of where I ran the wires through the firewall.

I took about 2 hours to do it. Mostly just figuring out how to rip the dash apart, where to tap for power and the like. It wasn't bad.

A custom audio shop? Or a Diesel tuner shop maybe?

5hrs is way to long. I did mine myself (x-MON) Pyro, trans and boost in about 3hrs... ..... And that was at least an hour drilling the manifold with a weak drill. The rest of the time was me BSing with a buddy and wirring the thing under dash.

The (X-Mon) uses a wire tap into the ecm harness for the tranns, couldnt have been easier.

I did the trans, boost, and EGT in 8 hours... BUT the trans hook up was only about 30 minutes.

The EGT took 6 hours. And I have the triple pod for the dash from autometer.

I just talked with a service rep at our local dealer about the importance of aftermarket gauges. We talked in particular about the transmission temperature gauge. He said the the 3rd gen trucks have a sensor built in that will give you an idiot light about the transmission temp being too high (he didn't know what the temperature needed to be to make this happen), and lock the transmission out of 4th gear. So, there is some built in protection, and, at least for us recreational haulers, it doesn't sound like it's necessary to add the gauges.

The idiot light comes on around 260 degrees. The PCM also forces the transmission out of overdrive until temp reaches 220 degrees.

I want to know well before my transmission fluid gets to 260. So far I have seen 190 max pulling 6500 lbs up Whitebird Hill. Outside air temp was 92. .
