I've got a 1998 12 valve and was wondering where the best place to mount the sensor for the transmission temp gauge. It says in the directions that came with the gauge to put it in the pan but is there a better alternative?
 
The pan isn't the best place, it will be the coolest part of the system, but is better than no gauge at all. Unless you have a aftermarket pan with a port you will have to weld one in the stock pan. The best place for the sender is in the output line to the cooler. One of the diesel shops in the east (Janetty Racing?) sells a tee kit to do this for around $30. What many have done to elimate the chance for leaks with a tee is buy an output line for a '94-'95 RH transmission, it has a port for the sender built in, costs a little less than $100.

You want to put your sender in the transmission cooling supply line. It will be the forward line looking at the transmission from the drivers side of the vehicle. This line on my truck was 1/2" OD. It's most likely the same on yours. I used a 1/2" x 1/2" x 1/4" (comp x comp x FIP) brass tee along with a 1/4" x 1/8" brass bushing. The quality of compression fittings vary greatly. Swagelok makes the highest grade fittings in my opinion. Gyrolok is another good manufacturer. If you have access to an industrial supply house I can give you some part numbers for these fittings. If you don't check your local hardware stores. Try to stay away from compression fittings that are the single ferrule type.

Like these guys say, in transmission output line is the best place.

That's the hottest temps you gets right out of the converter.

If it's hot at the sending unit then you know it's hot in the converter.

Hot runs up to 300 or so is not that bad for a minute or so as the oil will get cooled off and mixed in the cooler oil in the pan.

BUT this tells you that you are running the torque converter at very hot temps and could do damage. So you back off or something

In the pan, when it gets hot, your cooking or you've cooked your convertor.

You can't get this information with the s/u in the pan.

I totally agree with what Illflem stated above. Though I will not recommend buying the output line for the transmission that has the built in port for the trans temp sender.



I am on my second line now and both of them have had the most annoying rattling noise and there is no way to stop it. Apparently some lines rattle and some don't. It seems that my luck has not been good with these lines yet. What I would do is buy the manifold unit through Janetty Racing and just put that on the stock transmission line. It will be much more calmer on the nerves... TRUST ME!!!
