can someone tell me where this is on the transmission?

On a 48re it is in the upper right hand corner of the valve body inside the pan.

Upper right as in passenger front.

Is it merely a temperature switch (open/closed), or is it capable of reading and transmitting temperature?

Not a switch, it measures the full temp swing.
