I have a 2001 Dodge 3500 4x4 with the 5. 9 Cummins. It has 150,000 miles. It just started doing this. It happens going down the road unloaded. The transmission temperature warning light came on. I got out checked the transmission fluid. It was right where it should be and didn't smell burnt. The transmission isn't slipping or shifting funny. The light will come on after 30 seconds of driving in 20 degree weather after sitting all night. I can't believe the fluid is actually heating up that fast. When the light comes on, it shuts overdrive off. Then a second later, both lights go back out. Does it sound like I have a bad sensor or some electrical issue? Any help would be great. Thanks.

It does sounds like a bad sensor. Thou a trans temp guage is never a bad idea on an auto trans.

Sensor is in the bottom of the transmission. You have to remove the pan to get at it . I dont have my manual handy . I will try to get back to you if no one else chimes in with location.

I have an 01 2500 and don't have a transmission temp light??? was that at 3500 only option or what??

There is a sensor in the output line. Was not aware that it turned a light on on the dash. I have the manuals here in the 5th wheel and will look at it later today. SNOKING

My 02 2500 has the trans high temp lite on the dash. But, I was told that, if it lights up, its too late. So, I finally just installed a trans temp gauge so I can tell when its on the way up, not that the high temp is already there.

That is the general consensus on all trans temp lights... Its more of a "time for a new transmission" light.

Ok, the sensor is mounted in the governor body inside the transmission. If temp goes over 260F PCM will cause a 4-3 downshift and engage the converter clutch. I will light the overdrive OFF lamp. Has to cool to 230F to shift up again. Over temp light comes on at 275F and should sound a single chime. The PCM controls a transister that causes the LED lamp to turn on. The PCM gets it's input from the sensor.

So, I would say that if it does not down shift when the light comes on the problem is not the sensor. I would reseat the PCM connectors. Also clean all your grounds. I zillon of them.

Well today, I was driving and I don't think it is going into 1st gear and Overdrive? Is my transmission taking a crap or what? Thanks guys.

My 99 has a temp sensor that can be pulled from outside the transmission. It is located on the drivers side toward the bottom. What is it for?
