I installed a Perma-Cool remote transmission filter and temperature gauge today and the temp gauge shows about 210 degrees when the truck is idling in drive and when i go down the highway it stays pretty close to the same. Is this normal or is the gauge setup not accurate enough? This is all with the truck empty and towing nothing and with it 83 degrees outside. I thought it would cool down more on the hiway? The only reason i got it was to keep an eye on the temp when i am towing 29' alumalite at 5500 lb. full. I haven't towed it yet with the gauge installed and now i am paranoid since i have seen the temp. Is this a normal temp? What is to high if i am towing?
 
I would say

that the tempaerture gauge is reading too high.



Where is the sender located?



Mine is in the transmission line going out to the cooler and it will not exceed 150F until I either start backing the 5er for a short time or I am stuck in heavy traffic and then it will only be around 200 - 210

I agree something sounds wrong- I also have a temp guage, and only after running for some time and with wieght do I get up much above about 180. Pulling a cargo trailer I've seen 190-200.

The sender is located right in the filter mount as per the instructions. The instructions said it is imperative that the filter and sender goes before the fluid hits the cooler. I can feel the filter is pretty hot even withthe truck in drive with the emerg. brake on, and then the return line is a lot cooler. I was wondering if the gauge itself was worthy? Does anyone else run the perma-cool??
 
Trans Temp.

I also installed an after market trans. cooler after melting my first down. My temp. now runs @ 175 to 180 empty. When towing an 11,000lb. load the truck runs around 200 degrees. My temp. sensor is located on the passenger side of the transmission, center port. Seems like your temps. are running a little high.
 
My temp sender is located center drivers side in a deeper B&M trans pan which holds 3 qts more fluid. Not towing I rarely exceed 150-160 and towing I once saw 200 but not for long. I also am running amsoil synthetic. :D

Have a Banks with sender mounted in the pressure line out the the stock coolers, with ambient temp in the 90's I regularly see 180 degrees in stop/go traffic (when the TC is slipping and 'shearing' the fluid? This drops to 140 - 150 when underway. My 2 pesos.
 
If you are measuring the temperature of the oil that is coming directly from the torque converter, I wouldn't think that 210 degrees would be too far off with an ambient of 80 or more.



What is the range of your gauge? What is your indication when you first start up with the ambient near 80 degrees?



My first gauge that came with the Banks system starts at 100 degrees which makes it hard to tell where you are starting from.

I am now using a Westach gauge that reads from 50 to 350 degrees which I like better.



My sender is located in the pan which is probably the coolest oil in the system. The gauge usually reads ambient when I start up the truck and, in normal driving, it runs around 100 to 125 degrees.

I seldom see temps above 175 even when towing in hot weather.

It would be interesting to see how much heat rise there is in the oil after it passes through the TC.



If you want to make sure the gauge and sender is working,

remove the sender from the oil line but leave it connected to the system then drop it into a pan of boiling water and see if your gauge reads somewhere around 212 degrees.

93's run hotter and.....

I do not see that kind of temps in mine. At idle in traffic I rarely break 180*F, usually its around 150*ish. The only time I hit or pass 200 is under power.

Bill K. said that the 1st Gens are prone to running warmer too. My temp sensor is less than 10" along the outlet line from the converter, thats the hottest section of the line I believe.

I have the temp sender located in the "Mag-hytec" pan, and I have never seen the temp go over 190 F. and that was pulling GVW 16,000 lbs. in 100 F. weather going up an 8 degree hill. I do use a 100 percent synthetic ATF.

After the first big pull with my truck I saw temps in the 230 degree range. I pulled a 6k lb tt with the truck loaded with firewood and camping crap and saw some steep grades up hwy 4 towards Lake Alpine in CA. If I kept the transmission in 3rd with the od locked out, TC slippage would rocket the temps and cause quite a pucker factor to exist. I manually shifted to 1st and 2nd where the temps did fall some but maintained well over 200 degrees.



I have the temp sender in the out-line to the cooler.



I wonder if Bill K's TC and VB will help with the pull and temp?



I am closer to transmission bombing now than ever before.
 
Boy this has me wondering has anyone ever seen the "High transmission temp" light come on? I had heard 220 for the light but pulling on Friday, empty trailer ~4k mind you, in residential streets about 35-40 saw the highest I have ever seen 230-240 degrees and no hot transmission light. I think my 3rd gear is starting to slip and cause the high tamps cause I run 125-150 in OD at 60-85 mph hills/no hills.
 
I've had my high transmission temp light come on once, it also wouldn't go into lock up until it cooled down. My gauge read 250°. Happened pulling a 12k trailer up a 17% grade for 12 miles on a 95° day. Cooled to normal in less than 30 seconds after I hit the top of the hill.
