So this is the problem. As some of you know my tc was slipping so I decided to drop some money and have the whole transmission and tc redone.

I had a shop here in florida who I can't thank enough do all the work for me. They have been a huge help and without them I would be lost... .

well anyways, so they do all this work and they say it shifts real hard like I've run over something. So they have spent two days on the phone, with the company that sold the stuff up north and the trans go people to find out if it's just right.

They say that because I have 4. 10 gears that is going to be a problem. Only thing is I've got rickerson's and that drops my gear ratio down to about a 3. 60 not stock tires.

So i know this is long winded but Is this right, i haven't driven the truck but are the shifts supposed to be hard. They have lowered the pressure and they still bump hard. Now the company is backing out saying that my transmission shop has to sell me on the rough ride.

If it wasn't for the transmission shop spending 3 days making it just right I know I'd be screwed. Is this how it's supposed to be or am I missing something.

Makes you want to stop bombing. OOOOOOOHHHHNOOOO

ahh , i see the operative word , trans go kit , its a hit or miss with that VB mod , and in the end may end up costing you more .

yes the trans will shift hard with a shift kit , but how hard ? have you driven it ? what was the line pressure set at and what is it now ? line pressure being to high will make the shifts harder . if its shifting like you ran over something it sounds like what a friend went thru wit ha trans go kit , his line pressure was to high , but we didn't find the reason till after he bought a DTT VB and it fixed the shifting harshness .

good luck , hopefully you won't have to rebuy parts to get it fixed .

from what i have been told a 4. 10 does shift a bit harder , but with your big tires changing the ratio it shouldn't be that bad .

Well we might be getting closer to the bottom of this. I talked to my transmission guy and he said that the holes in the valve boddy were allready enlarged past the point and that they didn't have a good starting point. Looks like we might be getting closer to the end of this ordeal.

I have a 97 Dooley with 4:10 gears and have the 250 hp torque plate that was put in while we were at the Columbus, Ind. rally. Last October I decided to have the Pro-Loc torque converter with the trans-go shift kit installed at Fort Walton Beach, Fl. It does shift a little hard but I sure do like it. When I start it in the morning it seems to start off in 2nd gear but I can drive a few miles cut the engine off and when I start it again I can feel it shift from 1st to 2nd and so on. I don't have totell anybody that I have made a change, they always ask me what I had done. I also tend to drive a little faster so I don't get quite the milage I did before.

DieselDunn,
Replace the stamped plate with all the holes in it. Leave the holes stock. That was one change I made to the TFOD DIESEL kit installed. I had the JR kit in with the plate drilled out and it shifted HARD. The plate is only about $6. With the small holes, you (and your trans) can tolerate higher line pressure.

I installed a Red Butt Engineering shift kit and TC (Dunrite) sold by the folks at Dunrite. He used to work for Transgo and their shift kits are not made specifically for the Cummins set up. So he designed the Transbuddy shift kit for our rigs. Works great; the shifts are firm not hard.

Jim Northrum did the install and has been rebuilding trannies for 25 years; in fact his shop was used for the transmission seminar with Bill Kondolay a few weeks ago here in Texas. Kondolay said Jim knows what he is doing and he is authorized to install Kondolay's equipment. In short, Jim said "hard" shifts are not bad for the transmission, in fact they are better cause there is less slip.

I just installed the Transgo kit in my transmission. Yes it shifts hard, that is what I wanted, my TC clutch was slipping with the extra torque from my mild BOMBING and now it does not slip.
It is very important to adjust the line pressure, if it is too high you will have starts without 1st gear. Also put the resister in the sensor line for govenor pressure, this will help the shifting some.
I say for the money ya can't beat the transgo kit. MHO

DieselDunn:

If you have e-mailed me I apologize for
no response. My monitor is bad.

Anyway, I am sorry to hear about your
upgrade problems. As I told you before,
I ran the "TransGo" Kit for 98,000 miles
and NEVER had a problem with it. The
"oversized holes" in the valve body may
very well be your problem. Also, when I
"upgraded" my shifts also became harder
than they were stock.
