Just drove about 300 miles and am stranded in Eagle River Wisconsin. My truck has been not wanting to shift into park for the last week. Now it seems to be slipping out of gear while in drive. Only towing a 2 place snowmobile trailer. I seem to smell hot transmission fluid but cannot see where it is coming from.

HELP !!!

Sounds like the cable is misadjusted. Will it work in 1st and 2nd but doesn't want to find gear in drive?

The adjustment for the cable is under the dash, or, a BFH on the shift cable bracket might help some also.

No, it will not go into any gear at this point. It did this earlier in the evening when I stopped for fuel. I played around with the lever and it eventually went into gear.

Does anyone know if my truck has a linkage that goes down to the transmission or does a solenoid actually shift the transmission ? The more I think about it. It seems like the lever in the truck is moving butthe actual mechinism in the trans is not being moved.

I caught a ride to the cabin and need to get a plan by morning. Any help is appreciated.

Mike

The automatics are shifted by a cable. If you disconnect the cable fitting at the transmission linkage you can determine if the trouble is in the cable or in the transmission.

Be careful, I see a Darwin award happening here.

In other words, if you are going to be trying to manually move the shifter at the transmission with the engine running, have somebody in the cab with the parking brake on and foot on the brakes.

Yeah, you're right. I started to suggest that in an emergency he could shift it into Drive position at the transmission and drive it home but decided such a move offered too many opportunities for disaster.

Back to the OP and original issue.

Symptom description is not very clear. Could it be that the Park interlock is not retracting when the brake pedal is depressed?

That is an easy fix. Just remove the Park interlock switch from under the steering column, leave wires connected, and zip tie it to the column. Then the shifter can be moved freely.

My bet is you toasted the transmission. You stated you smelled hot transmission fluid, and you are running a Bully Dog.
