Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Front end whining noise ??

I have a 2001 2500 4x4 with the Cummins engine automatic transmission and the 3. 8 axle. I tow a 10,000 lb 5th wheel trailer. There are 75,000 km on the truck. When the truck was new I had a Banks Power pack system installed.

Lately I have been starting to have transmission problems. On my last trip this past weekend the transmission was slipping on a small incline and I had to reverse back and take a run at it to get up the hill. The transmission would shudder at 80 kmh when it shifted into OD and would shudder if I put too much power on. I was driving as if there was a egg on the accelerator as well. I was just trying to get home.

I have probably towed the trailer over 10,000 miles but outside of that there has not been a lot of hard miles on the truck. I do not accelerate overly hard when towing and try to watch the shifts to make sure they do not slam between gears.

I will be taking the truck back to the dealer for a service this weeks. It is parked until then. Any ideas what I can expect? Any suggestions as to what I should do to prevent this from reoccurring?

Thanks in advance for all replies

I believe your increased torque is causing the torque converter to slip because the line pressure is not high enough to hold it.

Babying it won't help. In fact it probably contributes to the problem because the line pressure increases in proportion to how far you have pushed the go pedal.

Mine did the same thing when I installed an EZ and a valve body from Bill Kondolay solved the problem.

It sounds as if you have torn up your TC with the extra power you added. The dealer is going to (unless you are very very lucky) void at least your transmission warranty due to the extra power. If I where you I would look into a new TC and VB. If you replace the parts with stock parts you are going to have the same problem again. You would be doing your self a favor looking at Diesel Transmission Technology or ATS transmission upgrades. I personally have DTT and love it. This was the best mod I did to my truck.

Oh ya, welcome to the TDR I see this is your first post. Sorry that your first post has to be a problem... . good luck.

Thanks for the replies. I was afraid of that. Does anyone know a good shop in the Toronto area to get the work done?

If it is not under warrenty then there is no way I am going to take it to the dealer.

I've been waiting to see of mr banks replied to the warranty comment by Bill. . but I never did see one from mr banks. . sad state of affairs. .

Have you tried the easy stuff first like changing the fluid, filter, adujsting the bands, and checking the line pressure? As far as these auto's are concerned, I've only had dealings with Bill Kondolay and James Northum, both are honest guys and won't mind a phone call.

It's a very rare vendor who will spend time on any forum like this. If you need to talk to them, call them and talk to them directly.

Mike

I took it to the dealer yesterday and they said that one of the bands is loose and that a valve may be sticking. They are going to fix it today. So far no word on if it is covered by warrenty. I am not going to go there and hope it just slips through.

On another topic. Does anyone have an opinion on the Ford 3500 Powerstroke? If the Dodge cannot handle the torque then I may just change trucks. Dropping an aftermarket transmission in is an option but before I put another $5,000 Cdn into the truck I would like to check out the Fords.

Shame the transmission is such a problem area. I have owned nothing but Dodge Rams over the past 10 years. This is the first one I added the aftermarket exhaust to but still a truck designed for heavy duty work and towing should not have such a weak link in its drivetrain.

Tchilderhose,

I think the problems you are seeing will happen to any brand of truck. When you have something like a Banks kit installed it will kill a stock trans. The number you came up with$5000, Is way out of line for a rebuild. You can get yours fixed for $3000 +- a few bucks. That is no where near the money you will lose driving a new Ford off a lot... ...
