I want to start by saying I have learned a lot from reading over these forums since I got my truck last summer and thanks to all of you for passing along then info! I drive a bone stock 2006 2500 4wd QC with the 48re. Up until buying this truck I have always shifted my own gears, but with all the stop and go I do now wanted an auto. My question is this and it may sound stupid to some of yall but here it goes... . When an auto transmission "goes out" on you, what is it that normally fails? I'm not talking about busting the input shaft with 1200lbs of torque, but what is the part that fails behind a stock engine under normal circumstances? Is it bearings, converter... . ?

Next question... . If I keep my truck within 50hp of stock or even bone stock, would I realize much from a more high performance converter? And if I keep everthing on the engine stock would there be anything that I should add at the time if I were to get a better converter installed?

Good questions but I think it depends on how you use the truck. Different applications place stress on different parts. I've seen where people have gotten alot of mileage with no problems using the truck just to drive to work. I've also seen peoplewho tow heavy burn up converters. I depends on your use I think.

I would agree with Valdez how you us it and what do you want it to do I have about 380,000 miles under my belt with two different trucks both auto the first trans just kinda just died at 160k in my 97 I think my torqconverter is what was dieing and ultimately caused a general melt down had a complete DTT trans installed WOW!!! like a totally different truck. the converter I believe made the biggest difference (try to find somebody close to you to go for a ride) it makes the truck totally different. At 389,000 miles(Thats 229000 miles later the bearing in the overdrive went out unfortunatly it put metal thru the whole trans so needed every thing new inside. The clutches and bands actually looked pretty good other than the metal in them. Fast forward to today my 06 has 128k stock trans yes I want a good converter but will wait till trans goes out than I will go for the full up grade as you can see Im not stock(probably 100hp+ over stock) but I have to drive to what the trans can hold. My truck has a trailer behind it 90% of the time. I can not see me driving a stick with all the driving I do. I would say talk to a few transmission shops tell them what you expect from your truck and go from there. Its funny Im actually excited that my trans will expire than I can really lean on it. Once you drive a well built auto you will be hard pressed to drive a stick again. If this is a truck you plan on keeping I would do it in a heartbeat you will also pickup a little mileage. Anyway Good Luck Randy
