I have 1998 12 valve with overdrive automatic transmission - see sig. For the past year every once in a while when I would put it to drive from park and try to take off she would bog down. i f I give it more pedal the engine will stall. If I take off pedal and shift back into N or P or R than back to drive she takes off fine and normal. This had only happended to me a few times until I change the fluid. Now it happens once or twice a day while using the truck for work (constant stop, park, start). The only thing I can think of is that the fluid is possibly to full, although it show ok on the dipstick. Is it possible for the transmission to have too much fluid causing it to lock up. Anybody else have this problem??

When you say it "bogs down" do you mean the engine bogs down?

Can you be a little more specific? Your problem might not be the Trans.

As far as fluid level, actually these transmissions like being a little over full. Better a little bit over full than not enough fluid.

The proper way to check the fluid is with the Trans Hot. Park on level ground. With the engine idling normally, shift the trans through P-R-N-D-1-2 slowly, and then back up into Neutral and leave it in Neutral. (You better put the parking brake on too!) Then get out and check the fluid.

I believe it is the transmission. The truck moves alittle but feels as if the parking brake is on, if i give it more pedal she stalls. I guess it could be the engine but have had no other problems or symptom or done any recent work. It seems likely that changing the fluid and filter had something to do with it.

Just thought of this. I did change the TPS about 3 months ago (was hunting for lockup). Is it possible for the TC to lock up when i put it in drive causing strain and eventual stall?? I have had so few problems with this truck I do not really know how many of the compents work, unlike my 450 7. 3 idi that I have had numerous problems and have good working knowledge of.

Have you had the transmission serviced lateley? If you have a dealer nearby that you trust, it would be a good idea to have them look at it.

If not, call one of the reputable transmission specialists who advertise in the TDR or are talked about here in the forum. I think any one of them would be able to give you some answers.

I doubt if changing the TPS could cause this problem. It sounds more like the transmission is trying to do two different things at the same time.

Since you can go through the gear selection process a second time and get out of the problem, it may just be a matter of a problem in the shift linkage.

Makes more sense now, my linkage is very sloppy, I dont' know why that is considering the low mileage. I bought the truck at 50,000 and unfrotunately don't have any p/o info. I will make a better efort to shift slowly and accurately and see if it helps. I do have a bad habit of just dropping it fast from park to start. I do a lawn route and therfore am getting in and out at least 30-40 times per day in the summer, I guess that will take its toll on things like linkages and starters etc.
