Hi, i thought i was a decent wrench, but the auto in my son's 92 is giving me fits. It was leaking out the converter cover, so we pulled the trans and changed the front seal. Guess what? it still leaked. So i pulled it again thinking i screwed up the seal and put in another nice and straight and even put a little sylacone around the seal to be sure. I even pulled the pump and checked the o-ring and it looked good. Put it back together again and guess what? still leaking. What am i missing? I am going to pull it again tomorrow night and try and pressure check the converter. Any ideas would be helpful. Randy :( :(

Did you check the snout of the torque converter for a grove worn by the seal? Also are the locating dowel pins in place? these properly locate the C/L of the transmission to the engine C/L?

Converter Leak

I had a leak in this area several years ago. When I pulled it the third time I was determined to find the leak and eliminate it.

I pressure checked the converter and found a crack in the weld holding the front hub, the one that goes into the end of the crankshaft. I talked to a neighbor who had been the shop foreman for TCI and asked him if I would be able to TIG weld this crack. He said no, that welding in this area would destroy a thrust bearing inside. Welding a crack somewhere out from the hub could be done, but not at the hub. I have read recently in one of the converter manufacturers material that the non lockup (A518) converters are prone to cracking. I replaced my converter with one from TCI and noticed a real improvement in performance. I will be replacing this one in 2 or 3 months with a lockup converter as I am now preparing a 47RH (A618) transmission to swap into my 1992 truck.

Also be sure to check the front pump gasket and "o" ring. There is also a plug in the front of the transmission case that seals the hole that the servo lever shaft is installed in. Although it is rare to leak, it should be checked.

Hope this helps!

:) :) :)

This trany was reworked in 02,( converter has an 02 date on a sticker). The snout looks good and the plug is sealed with teflon tape. So maybe there is a crack. If i have to get a converter where is the best place to get a stock replacement?Randy

I have had the best luck on any stock and some performance transmission parts at Dacco Detroit. They have many locations around the country and carry a very complete stock at very competitive prices. I don't know where the one nearest to you is, but I would bet there is one in Louisville. I know they have Tennessee locations in Memphis, Nashville, Knoxville, Chattanooga, and Cookville. I believe the Cookville location is their own converter rebuilding location.

I asked about a converter for a AT540 Allison once and the price was surprisingly low and it was in stock in the Memphis location, about 8 miles from me. Everyone I have talked to there seems to be very knowledgeable and happy to help.

Good Luck!

Hi, just an update. Even though i could not find anything wrong with the converter i was willing to try anything on the third time we pulled the trany. So i replaced the converter and leak fixed. Finally!!Randy
