DOES ANYBODY KNOW WHAT THE NORMAL OPPERATING TEMP IS ON AN AUTOMATIC TRANS? I INSTALLED A TEMP GAUGE AND DROVE AROUND TOWN AND THIS THING DOES NOT MOVE. I HAVE CHECKED FOR POWER, AND RESISTANCE IN THE SENDER UNIT. THE GAUGE IS AN ISSPRO TRANS TEMP. STARTING TEMP IS 140F.

I installed my sensor in the pan where I'm told the coolest oil is, but around town the temp never seems to get over 135-140. Stop and go on a hot day, I can make 150. Running down the highway locked up, it runs about 135. Hope this helps

THANKS FOR THE INPUT. I WAS READY TO SEND THIS GAUGE BACK. I INSTALLED IT IN THE MIDDLE PRESSURE PORT ON THE PASSENGER SIDE, I WILL HAVE TO GO AND TOW SOMETHING NOW. THANKS AGAIN.

I haven't had the opportunity to tow with the guage in place yet, but I'm sure someone on this forum will chime in and let you know what to expect. I'm in the midst of wrestling with the Stealer over the lousy trans rebuild they did, so I haven't pulled our trailer yet. I'll be watching for the temps that are normal for towing as well.

I have a 96, auto, and pulling 13000lb 5th wheel it never goes over 150-160, even in the mountains on a hot day. Running without trailer, it will run about 130-140. My sender is in the pan. It seems that your gauge starts at 140 is to high, unless you are pulling a load, then it will probably not show temp. , unless you are pulling on a hot day.

just my . 02 cents worth.

My 97 pulls a TT. total is about 14,000 lbs. Sender is in the out line going to cooler.

While pulling, no problem in overdrive lock-up. Usually about 140-150.

But if I'm pulling hard in lock-out or in 2nd going up a step incline, she'll move all the way up 230. Short bursts usually lasting a minute or two. Sometimes in 3rd you just can't enough speed to get to go into 3rd lockup.

Empty around town I get 140-150 if in 3rd locked in. If in OD I'll get 190 usually after a few miles of stop and go. Also, transmission has to be wamed up and this happens ususally after 20 minutes of driving around. Higway never sees over 150 as I'm always in overdrive locked up.

Pulling, you have to get use to the OD button all the time. You use 3rd lockup when you start as 3rd gear takes a while to get out of while you're pulling if you don't lock it up. This is where you make a lot of heat. Stuck in trafiic she'll move to 230 easily.

Then pop the OD button at 50mph and you go direct into OD locked.

goober
