Archived Trashed transmission

While towing a light travel trailer (4500lbs) through Ogden UT I suddenly lost both 5th. & 6th. gears in my transmission. My 2001 3500 has only 96K miles on it. Any ideas? Has any other member had the same problem?

keep us posted. I never heard of this happening on a 6 speed. Sorry for your troubles.

I called Midwest Transmission in MN yesterday. They say that its probably a broken shifting fork. Third gear is making expensive noises too.

I'm dropping it today and shipping it of to them for an exchange rebuilt transmission. I'll let you know what they find.

My 2001. 5 HO lost fifth and sixth gear with a bang last summer while pulling a 36' enclosed trailer, going up a hill with the cruise set on 75. I was able to make it back home driving in 4th with u. s. gear overdrive kicked in. The front end of the output shaft broke off where the tapered bearing on it runs inside the input shaft. I drove it for a couple of weeks like that without a problem (unless I forget and tried to use 5th gear, then it would try to lock up). Parts for repairs with me doing the labor was around $350. That sounds like maybe what happened to your's, other than mine was not noisey in fourth gear. Randy E

I was delivering the trailer I was hauling to Sandy UT from Clackamas OR. I don't have a two speed sooo--I delivered that trailer to Sandy, went down to Springville UT, picked up another trailer there and delivered that one to Casper WY, (home) all at 50mph in forth gear at 2700rpm. Long trip!

I have pulled the transmission and shipped it to MN on another one of our trucks headed that way yesterday. I should hear from the rebuild shop by the end of the week and let you and rashwor know what the problem was as soon as I know.

I just re-installed my transmission after it's return from Midwest Transmission in MN. GREAT RE-BUILD! It now shifts like a hot knife through butter.

Dan at Midwest told me that my problem was a common one with New Venture six speeds. There is a small bearing at the end of the main shaft that is a carry over from their four speeds. (three + overdrive) Like DC they are cost controlling rather than customer consious.

Since I haul heavy 18+K Tetons 5er's and Chinook Mini-Motor homes on flatbeds in sixth gear, I will have a bearing falure and twist off the mainshaft again unless I am more carefull and use fifth direct on hills.

My engine is pretty turned up and I have a 3. 55 rear end so I guess the weak spot is the transmission.
