Heading to Oshkosh WI for the EAA Airshow one of my "Bucket List" desires.

Greencastle IN to Oshkosh WI is only 360 miles & estimated travel time of 6 hours. looking at Chicago & Milwaukee as being the MAJOR traffic snafu's. Would like to travel most of this trip during the day so we can enjoy this part of the country that we've not really experienced. Any suggestions on routes through OR around these BIG CITIES would be appreciated.

Last time I went to Milwaukee I went I74 to Bloomington, then I39 north.

Traffic in close to Chicago is brutal.

First, I-Pass/EZ-Pass is your friend. I294 and the NW Trollway are far more enjoyable when you can zip past most of the troll traffic.

I65 to I90 (Ind. turnpike) west. Cross the Skyway. Get off and follow US41 N. That'll run you between Chicago and the lake, past Soldier Field. Anywhere you want, hang a louie and a ralph to drive through some of Chicago proper, then a ralph and a louie to get back to US41 (Lake Shore Dr.) (Find the route used for the chase in the Blues Brothers movie.)

Follow US41 far enough and you'll meet up with I94. Follow that N to I43, then I41.

Otherwise, the only way to really avoid Chicago is I74, I39, I90, then US151 in Mad. But that means dealing with traffic and construction on I90 in Wisc.

You *could* take I74 to IL47 N past Elgin and through Woodstock (where Groundhog Day was filmed). Once you hit Wisc., find likely roads and highways that'll take you N to Oshkosh.

The *only* other route is to go up Michigan and take the ferry over to Wisc. Unless you want to go all the way up to the U.P. and work your way down to Oshkosh.

Before he had his medical incident, a CPA friend of mine flew his Cessna 210 up for that show from the Elgin area pretty much every year.

Big,
Since you live in Greencastle IN I would suggest that you take I74 or I70 to I39 than north to I90 in Rockford where I39 joins I90. Now if you really want to go through the Gray IN/Chicago IL the traffic can be hit or miss depending on the time and if there is an accident on the interstates. Remember that I90/194/1294 and I88 are all toll roads in IL (no motor fuel tax supports these roads) and without an Easy pass or I pass transponder the cost can be quiet high.
Last Friday (July 13) I was traveling from Michigan to IL on I94/I90/I80 in the mid-morning hours say approximately around 10:00 AM, the west bound lanes where traveling around 70 MPH. The east bound lanes where backed up and was a rolling parking lot for 30 miles. The traffic was start to slow down around I57 at Country Clubs Hill IL on I80 and continue to a rolling parking lot until at least I65 outside of Gary IN.

Planned this the day we got to INDY last year. Son his family and the T Trailer (He still hasn't paid me for) SIL & significant other their T Trailer and Us & our Motorhome) we made reservations

Really looking forward to this
