Well when my boy was born I contacted Gurneys And Told them I wanted there hardest tree avalible thats diffrent than trees in my area and that will live a long time !!!!! to plant for my boy ... ... I Am Aware of local Hardwoods but I wanted some thing that would stand out from the woods we live in and that would be easy reconizable to him as he ages ..... one day he could show his kids and say thats my tree ... you know what Im saying guys.....
Anyway they told me the HARDEST TREE THEY SELL IS... . Quaking Aspen So I said Ill Take it like $35. 00 or what ever but I got it ...
Even did a fancy planting with processed Top Soil and Manure and everything I could to possibly promote growth ... . so far its doing great I planted it on his 1yr BD and now hes 2-1/2 and the tree is doing awesome ...
Resently ... ... . It was noted to me that this tree is not a hardwood and it will not live very long and its one of the most common trees around I was angry because thats the 3 things I DIDNT WANT..... So I did some research and Low And Behold Gurnseys Hosed Me I have contacted them about false advertizing and they have removed the add now if you search there site for a Quaking Aspen a BIRCH tree comes up. Well Good enough for me I GUESS... it just stinks when you are mislead by such a respectable company.
Just thought Im would pass this List along... .....
Each hardwood species has unique physical properties, and when it comes to hardness, the U. S. species vary widely. For example, the hardest commercially available hardwood is hickory, and it is five times harder than aspen, one of the “soft hardwoods. ”
Species ///// Pressure To Mar
(Kiln-Dried) ///// (In Pounds)
Hickory, Pecan 1,820
Hard Maple 1,450
White Oak 1,360
Beech 1,300
Red Oak 1,290
Yellow Birch 1,260
Green Ash 1,200
Black Walnut 1,010
Soft Maple 950
Cherry 950
Hackberry 880
Gum 850
Elm 830
Sycamore 770
Alder 590
Yellow Poplar 540
Cottonwood 430
Basswood 410
Aspen 350
I dont know where Locust fits in and I figgered Red/White Oak would be #1 and any type of maple would be a bit lower in the hardness factor and why would Cottonwood even be a hard wood its junk ... . softest wood I know maybe I need to do a bit more studying on trees.
