2003 - just broke professional quality socket trying to remove front brake caliper. No torch available. Anybody got any ideas..... ??

Thanks - PAul

I just did my 2002 front brakes.

I split a Craftsmsn socket, then went to my local real auto parts store and asked them.

I bought a 1/2" S&K socket to do the job. However, Tom (parts guy and race builder) said DC and other mfg are using nylon to thread lock bolts. If I still had trouble then gently heat the area where the bolt threads are to soften the nylon and it will come right out.

I tried the brute force method once more and it came out with the 1/2" professional socket.

When I do my rear brakes I am going to do the heat method. He said a propane torch will do it. Gentle heat.

Tom said some U Joints are only nylon sealed in, no bolts or other retainers, so the stuff is pretty tough.

Heat will soften it though.

Are you trying to remove the caliper or the bracket that it fastens to? The caliper retaining fasteners should be either socket head hex or torx drive bolts. bg

Just got em' loose. Guess I just needed to toss on my Harley Davidson hat and the attitude that goes with it. 18" breaker bar and a size 13 bood didn't hurt either.

Anti-sieze compound for next time.
