Competition injection pumps

This probably isn't a very hard question for some of you, but I was wanting to trim some of the fins off of my water pump to keep from blowing the freeze plugs out of the block. And was wondering how many of the fins to take off. Do you take 2 or 3 of the fins off. I guess it would be every other one, even though that makes it look like it might be a little bit off balance. This truck is only a pulling truck so reliability is not really a problem. Thanks. Let me have your knowledge.

Why not drive it with an electric motor like us ol' timer drag racers did? It also allows the coolant to circulate after the pull until things cool down!

Here is a question... for those that have done this what do you do with the factory pump. Trim all the fins so you can keep the pulley and there for the same stock belt and configuration or do you land up doing something else? How about the electric pump that fits into the stock location? what would you land up doing then?

Just curious as I am thinking of going this route very soon.

The electric water pumps go in the same location as the factory one does. I am not sure what you do with the belt? I would imagine that the belt would work cause there isnt much pressure on the pulley of the factory pump but like i said i am not sure. I dont know what class you plan on pulling in but they might not let you run the electric one in certain classes. But like i said i am not familiar with these pumps but if they are allowed in most classes i might run one in my pulling truck. What ever you find out let us know cause i am looking to something like you are trying to do. You can look at the electric one at Enterprise Engine Performance

Back in the day, we drove the stock water pump using a gear-belt and plastic pulleys. The electric motor was mounted on its own bracket. Check Jegs, Summit Racing, etc for kits to make things easier.

you need a new belt for the these new electric pumps that bolt up in the same place as the factory one--there's also another one that you install in the lower radiator hose--It's called a Meziere I think, BBD had one on his old truck I believe and he could shed some light on this----I thought Haisley or Scheid sold these, but I can't find it now-----

Has anyone actually trimmed there fins. I did not ask about the electric water pumps. But thanks for the information. If anybody has trimmed there stock fins to reduce pressure I would appreciate hearing from you. .

I know of a couple guys who have trimmed. They look at it and pick the 2 that look the closist from being straight across from eachother.

what he said 2 fins. i done it to mine, i used a dremel with a cut off wheel to cut the fins off then i smoothed it out with a with one of the dremel stones or sandpaper rolls. i drove it on the street and didn't have any overheating problems, when the engine was at idle there was no pressure in the coolant hoses but once it got up to 3000rpm you could see them expand. before i did this i could rev it up at and when i got up around 5000rpm it would blow coolant all over the place

i recommened the electric water pump from enterprise. a friend of mine drives his on the street with no problems. plus you can cool the engine with the key off for the next pull.

So with this pump installed what is going to happen with the belt configuration if someone were to be still needing an ALT or are the guys that are running these pumps no longer on the road and just a puller and use a charger to top up there batteries after every pull?

like stated above--you're just dropping the water pump pulley--all other belt driven accessories stay--so you need a shorter belt since you're not using the OEM pulley driven water pump----chris

I think had they had the electric pump that in goes in place of the stocker I would have done that but it wasn't out at the time.

The Miezire pumps are exspensive then you have to fabricate a bracate, wire it, gerry rig a lower rad hose, and find the right belt.

It is nice to be able to leave the water pump on and circulate water with the motor off even better when you can leave your electric fans on as well :D

I have a company I deal with making a electric water pump for a cummins, I sent them the stock on and he said no problem. good thing is it should sell for about $250. 00 And yes thier specialty is electric water pumps.
