Earlier today I went to fill my truck up. After filling I reset the tripmeter to 0. I went home and did work on truck to install cables for winch on flatbed trailer. Batteries were unplugged for approx 3 to 4 hours. when I got done I pulled the truck out of shop and checked everything out and low and behold the tripmeter had reset itself back to zero. Have any of you encountered this situation? What could/would cause this?

The tripmeter is stored in volatile memory in the instrument cluster, not in NVRAM in the PCM/ECM. Thus, when you disconnect the batteries, the trip meter resets to zero. I've found this to be a very minor peeve in the 15 years I've owned my '98; I've gotten used to it.

In contrast, the odometer is stored in the PCM and is sent to the cluster via the CCD bus.
