I have a 2000 2500 Series 4X4 24 Valve Cummins Diesel with 5 Speed Transmission with 16,000 miles. No previous problems and started running rough, lost power, runs at idle but heavy exhaust smoke. Trouble Code P 1693 now shows. I replaced the lift pump, and pulled fuel tank checked it... was clean. Fuel filter was clean, I replaced it anyway. Don't know what else to check from here. Any ideas?

Still under warrantee? Let the dealer take care of it you paid for the 100 k use it before it's gone. 1693 is a general code I beleive - there's a code page on this site somewhere. Sorry I don't know it's location I bought a code reader as my early 99 can't display on the odometer like the late 99 & up can. good luck.

code

code 1693 is a companion code meaning that somewhere in the dark recesses of the engine electronics is a code that will not show on the odometer readout. Maybe somebody nearby with a scan tool can help out.

good luck

If you have an Autozone around you they will read the codes for free. Fill out your profile with location, there might be a TDR member nearby with a reader that is willing to help. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to diagnose without gauges or codes.

btw: Welcome to the TDR!

Had truck scanned; fault generated in the companion engine control module. Mechanic says I need to take it to the dealer and have the module replaced. He says that the Dealer is the only one with the proper software to reprogram it???? If that's the case then I have to have it towed 150 miles to the mainland.

I would look for a new or used ecm and install it, or Im a little inexperienced in the bombing procedures but no big deal send it to marco!

Help.

Before towing it do clean the AIT and MAP sensors All wires clean with WD 40 spray after connecting and disconnecting a few times Add new Diesel to tank check air filter fuel filter all fuses and wires ,grounds etc. Read the shop manual for your truck and ask for help from other members in your area look in the Travel companion .
