Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Popping noise in front end?

Finally got a test fuel pressure gauge put together and made the initial tests. At first I thought I had done something wrong in assembling the gauge because I got 0 psi at the VP 44 schrader valve at idle right after start on a cold engine. Next I moved the gauge to the schrader valve on the inlet side of the filter and had 13 psi at idle. I said OK, maybe the gauge wasn't primed or something like that at first, so moved it back to the VP 44, but still no pressure. OPPS!!

Now I'm really scratching my head because the filter (stealer installed for $85-ouch!) only has 5000 miles on it.

In total I only have 21K miles on the '01.

Questions:

1. Could the schrader valve at the VP 44 be bad?

2. Is it "normal" for a filter to plug after only 5000 miles?

3. Could the Power Services additive I've only used on the current tank full be the culprit?

Weather in not a factor because it has been a very balmy winter here in Western Washington.

Since the whole mess is still under warrenty was thinking of calling the stealer for the fix, but not if they are going to charge me for a new filter. Would replace that my self for considerably less cash.

Anyone have any comments or ideas of what to do next?

The first thing to do is to change the filter. The truck runs, so you know some fuel is getting to the injection pump. Change the filter and check it again. Then if still no pressure is read go chasing the banjo.

Forgot your questions.

1, Yes it could, but is not likely.

2, No but it can and has happened, in as little as 500 miles.

3, No.

If you take it in you will be charged for a filter change again. For what they charge you can change the filter at home at least 5 times.

Remove the valve core from the test port, just like taking a core out of a tire valve, and retest. My guess is you will get a reading.

Just try to push in the Schrader valve at the VP44 inlet with your finger. If it moves, have someone bump the starter while you push it in again ( wear safety glasses). If you get fuel out of the Schrader, it's fine. If not, swap it with the post filter Schrader or just replace it. I think I still have one of my Schraders left from when I removed them. I'd have to check, but if I have it and you need it, let me know and I'll throw it in the mail to ya ;) .

This was the ticket I was looking for. Will probably leave it as is for a little while longer and eventually replace it with a Geno's tapped banjo for hook up of permanent gauge.

 Thanks to everyone for all of the suggestions. Was pretty sure it was either this or the filter. My MO is to always try the easy ones first.

I had a new filter go south on me in just one tank of fuel. Just depends on how clean the fuel is that you are buying.

S. valves in my experience don't fail. Ever had one on you tire not work? You can manipulate it with the truck running. Just press in the stem and see if it leaks/sprays.

Just my thoughts.
