I'm on the road about a hundred twenty miles from home and I just got the grid heater light with 10 chimes no loss of power no black smoke or nothing and now it's cleared I'm wondering what that means and if it's something I should be really concerned about or not so much

Thanks for any input you might have

I forgot to mention it's an 06 mega cab 5.9 4 wheel drive Laramie

It looks to be an injector trouble code according to this service bulletin .

SUBJECT:
Flash: Diagnostic Enhancements For Fuel System
OVERVIEW:
This bulletin provides Engine Control Module (ECM) software enhancements to improve robustness to fuel system issue detection and two new Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's). This bulletin involves selectively erasing and reprogramming the Engine Control Module (ECM) with new software.
Diagnostic procedures for these new DTC's are included in this Service Bulletin on the last 2 pages which may be printed.

The two new injector Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's) for excessive injector return flow are:
· P1222 - LEAK DETECTION DURING MOTORING
· P1223 - LEAK DETECTION BASED ON QUANTITY BALANCE
**When the fault(s) occur, a solid Wait to Start lamp will illuminate in the cluster along with chiming 10 times. When the fault goes inactive, it will clear the wait to start lamp with no chimes**.

Well nuts, since it cleared i guess i can infer i have some unknown time before im screwed? Timing couldnt be worse of course

Thanks for the info

They never seem to fail at a good time. Keep us updated as to how this progresses for you. Hopefully you can complete your trip without issue.

Thanks I sure will
Well of course it came back and has stayed on now for about 90minutes steady. I guess I'd really like to know if i need to find a place to park it until i find someplace next week or if itll last the 500 odd miles until i get home

Thanks

Any evidence of fuel in your oil, any strange exhaust smoke color, is it still running OK, missing, etc?

Still runs fine, no smoke, checked oil and level is right and doesnt seem to smell like fuel. It cleared and hasn't returned so far.

I'll get it in to someone who should be able to figure it out next week, assuming i get home

Thanks all

well the latest is this, it has tripped and cleared a couple times, I got it into the closest dealership who did find a 1222 code stored, it was easily cleared. The TSB above didnt show up at first for my 06 but they decided it was a pressure control valve needed a flow test per a TSB but didnt have the necessary specialty tool (?) so I have an appointment at a larger dealership in Santa Fe on Tuesday afternoon. I hope they can tell me something definitive then, we are supposed to head out to load up with grandkids on Wednesday at noon. Sure be nice to know if whether the light indicates an immanently terminal condition or is an early indicator or troubles to come.

The DTC means there is a problem. It could be something serious or it could be a false positive from several different places. The 1222 is the least worrisome, it generally means it is bypassing too much fuel in coast mode. Likely source of the problem is injectors, you do NOT want Dealer selling and installing injectors to you. Make then run the tests on injector return flow, CP-3 return flow, rail PRV test, and LP test. Get actual readouts and numbers or do not pay them. In fact, demand the results on paper and explained to you before authorizing work. Unless they can positively guarantee what they replace will fix the problem do NOT let them.

Why dads truck had that same issue, the lights would kick on every day for about 2 months then last week the actuator on #4 just failed resulting in a tow home

Thanks, unfortunately I got it in to the dealer in Santa Fe and their preliminary diagnosis was that two injectors were leaking, I was committed to heading out of town the next day so I rented a vehicle and took off as planned. I got a call a couple days out saying that the dealer had confirmed the leaking injectors and after consultation with regional somebody or other the only solution was to replace all the injectors. I was informed of this while 800 miles away and before I saw your post cerberusiam and also before it occurred to me to go to Albuquerque to Cummins and have them look at it. So the dealer is supposed to be replacing all the injectors now. I got back today and called but no update on progress, I expect a call back tomorrow and will ask about the tests mentioned.

Im really disappointed with this truck, there is seemingly always something and they all start at $2-3K. Im seriously debating getting rid of it but with a new transmission a couple months ago, with upgraded parts of course, new front pinion bearings, unit bearings and axle ujoints just before that and now the *(&5 injectors Im not sure I can even recover this years repairs if I sell it... and thats before I rob another bank to try and fix the damn HVAC issues....

Sorry to hear, but we pretty much knew that injectors were in the picture once you were getting that code. I do understand your frustration, I had one heck of a year with my '07. It is so unreliable, I ended up having to buy another truck in order to get to my work 5 weeks ago. I am still scratching my head as to why I continue to keep that '07 fix the thing over and over again. But, as you said, once you are in so deep with other repairs, you have to keep going.

288K miles on the way home from picking it up. The service guy commented on what good shape it was in for whatever thats worth...
