I have a friend with 97 cummins turbo. sometimes it will not start untill 3 or 4 tries, or turn off untill 3 or 4 tries. He has replaced the fuel shutoff solenoid. Any help would be appreciated.

I had problems with my '99 not starting at times. The starter would just click and then the next try it would turn over and start. It got to the point that it wouldn't start more than it would, so I finally replaced the starter and the problem is gone. I know that these starters have problems with the contacts after time and that you can get a kit to fix the issue. It was easier for me to replace with a reman starter from NAPA, after the core it was only $165. Hopefully this helps, good luck.

Starter , FS relay , ing. sw. , I should have listed the ing sw 1st , put a test lite to the wire & see what keeps power on .

I take it the engine is cranking but not starting, so has he changed out rubber fuel hoses or checked for other places where he could be sucking air into.

Engine not turning off.

There is test where you hook up test light to the run pin while igniton is turned to run postion you jiggle the key if light goes off and on you need new ignition switch. You have to unhook connector on steering column.

If engine is not cranking (starter not running) unplug connector on steering column(check which pin is to starter relay) put a jumper wire between pin that supplies power to ignition and the pin that activates starter relay. If starter works your ignition switch will need replacing.

If starter does not run check out the starter relay.

Take off starter have it checked out make sure it not wearing out at the same time check out the contacts in starter solenoid make sure they are not worn out.
