My 99 is back on the road after over a year of problems. Great news!

BUT. .

I find the cab really reeks of diesel exhaust.

I am looking for suggestions as to how to pin point the source and best known ways of cleaning out the odor.

I did idle it several times over the year to keep the batteries charged and to hear the mighty cummins while stuck with the crown Vic... . Perhaps I saturated the cab with exhaust?

I know the blowby is starting to increase a bit. I noticed the bottom of the cab is black and moist. Good rust treatment perhaps but could that be the source of the exhaust smell?

The exhaust system itself is fine. Oversize and half the age of the truck.

Any thoughts or success stories to share?

It is pretty bad. I swear I can taste the fumes and I hope the headache I have had for two days is from a cold and not the exhaust...

Thanks all, nice to be back in the truck again... .

Is it a full exhaust or does it end underneath the truck? My first thought would be to double check the exh. manifold, downpipe elbow at the back of the turbo, etc. under the hood for any leaks. Have you noticed the smell with only the heater on or is it constant?

I am thinking more with the heater. Now wondering about the hood gasket below the windshield. Searching the web looking for ideas... .

Only gaps in that gasket are near the hinges where the foam fell out. Anyone experience a connection between that foam and cab exhaust odor? I will find something to plug up the area for a test.

I think you have an exhaust leak possibly pre turbo... will make it into the cab no matter what at that point.

Easy enough to find an exhaust leak using a stethoscope or just a hose

Using a hose or stethoscope, how would you determine where an exhaust leak is ? (I think I may have one on my mg that I cant find, only smell)

Run it along all joints/flanges or other suspected areas. The sound will be different as you pass it over the leak

Thank you for the ideas. I will check it out tomorrow.
Next problem found while waking the beast from it's long slumber: the good old CAD is popping in and out of 4wd. Maybe a new thread for that one...
