Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) injector question

Guys, my friend and I have 1997 diesels, one being an A/T, the other a M/T. When I let up on the pedal quickly while at speed, or turn off the cruise control via the button, we get a clunk felt especially in the steering wheel. We both have replaced the following: all 4 tie rod ends, shocks, upper and lower control arm bushings, and he has replaced the steering box and shaft. I have not on my A/T trk. I just replaced all the drive line yokes/u joints and greased them too.

What do you think is going on? Thanks all, Gator
 
Do you have a truck with a two piece rear driveshaft? The carrier bearing in the two piece driveshafts will do this when the rubber has gotten soft.
 
If you are feeling it in the steering wheel I would look at the motor mounts. Raise the hood and put the auto in drive and give it a little fuel and watch to see if the sngine moves excessively. bg
 
Steve, my friend has already replaced his and mine is fine. It's not in the transfer cases either. Both trucks, and I speak for mine especially, transmit the clunk thru the steering column . It is really noticeable when the wheel shakes my hand each time this happens. I also replaced the Lukes link. This has been going on for 25K miles in mine and not sure how long in his.
I have 511K + on my rig and he ahs 250K + on his. Very irritating and loud! It's seems like it ahs to be somewhere in the front end............. puzzling to say the least. What say you? Mike
 
Could it have anything to do with the body mounts being loose or worn? Cab can flex but steering shaft is firmly attached to the box which is mounted to the frame. Check bushing at the firewall where the steering shaft is. Also check the steering shaft for loose ujoints.
