Insurance for 5er

Airbag pressures

There has got to be some kind of way to haul an atv or two preferable while pulling a 5th wheel. Next 5'er will be a toy hauler.

My wife and I hunt some kind of serious and we really need to haul 2 atv's.

Top of the 5th is not an option.

This 37 foot Newmar is 12600 empty and only has 2 axles. So the extra weight on the rear of the 5'er would probly bow down. Only pulling 50 miles to hunting land.

Over the cab is the only space I have left.

I wish doubles were legal in Alabama.

Thanks Tim

In most states, maybe all states, you can pull another vehicle behind a 5er. Each state has a total length limit.

check your local laws you may be legal to tow trailer behind 5er. some states like wyoming allow 2 trailers, but here in colorado only 1 trailer, but any saddle mount (goose neck , fifth wheel) is considered 1 vehicle and you can pull trailer behind it.

No doubles says the law. Just did a search.

I was hoping there was someone on this site that had a engineering degree in redneck mobility.

If you are only pulling 50 miles then making two trips is going to be the cheapest solution.

On the other hand, even if it's iffy legally, what's the chances of being stopped on the 50 mile route if you tow doubles?

Our next trailer will be a tag for the very same reason. ATV's in truck, & trailer behind.

Solution

Consider a one or two wheel platform attached to the rear of your 5iver with two connections that swivel up and down only, and the wheel or wheels swivel.

Not to hijack this thread, but it IS legal in CO to pull double behind a ball (bumper pull) RV trailer. The state DOES NOT differentiate between 5th wheel, goose neck, or pull behind. I have confirmed this with the CSP, and do it myself with a 32' bumper pull RV and either my boat or two spot ATV trailer. I come in at appx 69', which is just below the 70' state limit.

That being said, you may just have to risk it by double pulling to do it with your 5'er. One thing to consider with a toy hauler. Do you always ride the ATV's from your campsite? If not, you still have to get the ATV's to the trailhead. We almost pulled the trigger on a toy hauler until we realized it wouldn't work for us. We generally have to travel from our campsite to various off-road trails to ride the ATV's.

Get a small atv trailer and have your wife tow it and follow you. If you had a Jeep or similar veh. you could also use it while camping.

Thanks for the many reply's.

I'll talk with the local law rep's to see how bad the fine will or won't be for pulling doubles.

a trailer is still a trailer

Mabye this ATV trailer won't count as a second trailer behind your 5ver.

Could be something to check into.

I don't see how this trailer could not count as being a trailer. But it's one cool trailer! Thanks for the link. I wonder if you could back up with this thing behind an RV trailer? Backing up doubles is all but impossible. I'm sure there are a couple of guys who can do it. If I can back my 5th wheel on the spot first time, I feel like jumping around and spraying champange ;)

Cheers,

Neil

If you can get a class V hitch on the back of the 5'er you could put one ATV on a hitch mounted carrier. I've seen them advertised up to 1K lbs, though that's entirely depending on the hitch and what it's mounted to.

here comes egg in your face... ... ... ... ... ... ... TOYHAULER :-laf

trade the Newmar and get a Toy hauler. option it without the vapor wall and you can get more than two in there. We can sleep 8 in beds and have 16 feet of garage space. I can go as many as 12 if we use the ramp room.

Ours is a 30TT and the most i've had in it is: a Yamaha Timberwolf, Polaris Sportsman 500 and Yamaha 50cc (stacked on the racks of the Polaris) four wheelers , a suzuki JR50 motorcycle, Yamaha TTR125 motorcycle and a KAWi KDX200 motorcycle all at once!!!!

its has the cargo capacity of 2600lbs

BTW: I had 155 jumps, 2HALO's (14K), water trained and held a D license before i gave it up for the "family" thing. jumped in CO a few times on vacation one year too.

A good friend of mine that I have known since 1952 has one heck of a rig. It's a FL60 Freightliner with a complete set of tools and all the welders you could want or need on board. On the back he has a 45' custom 5th wheeler that he built from the wheels up. Really nice job by the way. On the back of this he tows a small car, now a VW, before a Toyota 4wd. He told me that you can haul a PIN and a Ball legally not two Balls. He tows this rig twice a year from Yuma to New york and then back. He has traveled all over the US in this way. He also is 86 feet long and weighs 54,000 pounds loaded. Bob says he has not been stopped for this. I see these rigs a lot in AZ and Calif. Pickup, 5er and trailer with ATV's.

It depends on the state, it IS legal in Colorado, WY, and SD (to mention a few that I travel in) to pull ball and ball.

(Had to be careful typing that, the alternative was "it is legal in Colorado to tow with two balls") :-laf

I was told when I took my cdl test that two balls in colorado was not ok!

I do see people pulling two balls through colorado, and usually they have wyoming plates.

I wanted to make sure it was legal before I starting pulling doubles ball to ball so I called the CSP (Colorado State Patrol) and they confirmed that ball to ball IS legal, they do not differentiate between ball, 5er, or GN. I made him repeat it about three different times three different ways to make sure. He specifically said that ball to ball (or bumper pull if you prefer it that way) is legal.

It's a quick call to the CSP if you want to find out for yourself. It took me all of a few minutes earlier this past summer when I called.

Edit: Perhaps there is a different standard for commercial purposes, but for private use there is no differentiation between hitch types.

I dont want to call them, you will get 3 diffrent answers from 3 diffrent people. I tried calling the weight station once for answers them guys are worse you will still get diffrent answers to the same question + attitude.
