So with the 4th of July weekend here, and all of the anti-patriotic horse S that goes on in my neck of the concrete, i found it necessary to act
Every 4th I head home to the Sierras for your typical BBQ, beer tasting, fishing, lead disposal, brass recycling, and tall tale sharing weekend. Stories where the bucks you shot get bigger and bigger, and the girls you dated get prettier and prettier.
It's also important to take the time to think about what it truly means to be free and forget about all the nonsense in Washington for one weekend. Having been to many other countries that do not share our freedoms, i can honestly say we are all truly blessed and live in the greatest country ever, period.
Sooooooooo i wanted to share my patriotism via flying colors on my 3hr drive through the heart of Kommiefornia and sending a message to the locals that there are people in this country who truly believe in real "change". I was lying in bed running ideas through my head on how to build these things. I ended up feeling like Homer Simpson scribbling away madly at designs that looked like crap. I finally decided to head down to the big home improvement store and just see what they had.
I started out with a bunch of 1" black steel pipe and fittings and all sorts of 90's and T's and quickly realized my "idea" was already over $200. Crap. Then it came to me, the greatness of simplicity! One 2"x12"x8', two metal gate posts, and two 1 3/8" wooden dowels(for closets and what not). And some miscellaneous mounting hardware. Here's what i came up with...
Laid all the parts out

Cut the 2x12 to fit the bed and then measured the post for semi-equal distance. Used some meaty screws and some washers for the posts.

I then took some old 2x4 i'd used for concrete forms and tied that with the 2x12 i'd trimmed for rigidity. In the past i've used sand bags in the bed to smooth out the ride, i'm going to lay them all over the assembly to hold it down in the bed. It's very heavy so it should be fine even without the bags. I then just screwed the flag with a washer through the eyelets to the dowels. Put them in the pole holder and used window shims to keep them stiff. I'll post pics this weekend of them in action! What'd ya think?
