Anyone traveling from SF to La Quinta???

Piggy-Back Pop Up

I have a 8. 5ft fleetwood angler slide in truck camper I haul in my 98 q/c long bed. I am looking at a 03 q/c short bed Im not sure if I would have any problems with the camper or the short bed truck? the camper only weighs 1700 lbs I am going this weekend to try out the truck. anyone made this swap?

My concern with the short bed would be the camper center of gravity. It should be slightly forward of the axle. With the short bed it might be too far to the rear and cause handling problems although 1700 pounds is fairly light.

I don't think you'll have any problems with your Angler on a QC short-box.

We hauled a Lance 820 with a dry weight of 2800# on our 2500 QC short-box for a year. Air-bags and Rancho 9000X's made it a breeze to drive!

Here's a pic:

The only reason we traded it for a TT was more room for the 4 of us on longer trips.

By the time you load the camper with gear, grub and water you will weigh much more then 1700 lbs. I've had cab-over-campers off and on for some 33 years and the best advice I can give you is to have the right truck under the camper. It's always better to have more truck then not enough. I'd get a 3500 SRW long bed. For a camper larger then a 9 1/2 ', I'd get a DRW.

thanks for the replies. I believe it will be ok my camper weighs alot less than a lance camper. the only other thing I will need to consider is my truck's tail lights will be partialy hidden by the camper I noticed the lance has its own tail lights where it was made for a short box. that should not be that big a deal to rig up some lights. that is a nice looking truck and camper MDietrich
