I was moving my truck around in the garage today and after I got it where I wanted, shut the key off and it continued running. It didn't "runaway" or anything like that, just continued idling for about 30 seconds and then shut itself off. Any ideas/suggestions, Thanks

Truck is in current restoration and not on the road as of yet, but it never did this before.

mine's been doing that for about a year now, i think the solenoid is sticky, just haven't taken the time to check it out

yes it is a sticky fuel shut off solenoid im not sure how they work on 1st gens but garantee if the truck keeps running like that sit the fuel soleoid probaly just needs a clean and it will be good. we are having this problem on a couple of are second gens so i know its got to be that

Just as it stays running when you turn the key off, you will get some place and will not start. In some cases even getting an out and whacking the side of the fuel pump will not allow it to start. If you are having these problems and do not do anything about them you will be screwed somewhere down the road. I put a few pictures in Web shots that might help down the road. If it were me I would go ahead and cut the metal tab thingy out of the way. And carry the wrenches with you.

My 93 had the same intermitent problem when I bought it and the previous owner hooked up a pull cable to the dash so that if it did not shut off, you just had to pull on the knob attached to the cable. The result was manually shuting down the motor (think heavy equipment).

I actually have a air shutoff already assembled, but not installed. If I ever wanted to pull the truck, it would already be there. I will work on it within the next few days and report back what I find. Keep the ideas coming.

Ignition Switch

If it stays running again, pull the fuel solenoid wire and see if it dies. If it does not it would probably be the solenoid. Mine died right away if the wire was pulled. The yahoo I got the truck from just installed a cheap toggle switch inline with the solenoid. I yanked that, fixed the wiring, and replaced my ignition switch.

Problem solved.

The rubber tip on the solenoid plunger has probably broken off on one side. I replaced the solenoid 2 months ago because of this and had to do it again a week ago after a dyno run up at Ponci's in Fortuna. the plunger tip came apart again. These are new Bosch units and seems to happen after a hard run. Truck just keeps running after the key is shut off. Stomp also has this problem.

This is the third Solenoid I've put on in the past 5 years, the first one was the truck just quit when towing the travel trailer through San Fransicko. The coils that hold the plunger open burned out then.

I now carry a spare with me. ;) :)
