Today while driving my truck died twice. It was just like someone shut off the key. After cranking for a while I was able to get it restarted and when it is running it runs fine. When I got home I checked and it is giving the following codes:

0500 No VSS signal

1693 DTC deteced in companion module DTC detected in PCM/ECM

Any ideas on what this means? Is there something I can check to fix or am I in for a trip to the dealer?

I am getting the same code but i have other problems

after going through the procedure book from dodge I learned that the 0500 code is for vehicle speed sensor on gas engines.

on our diesels we are supposed to get 0501 if there is a problem with our speed sensor.

So by that the problem most likely has nothing to do with the speed sensor.

My "intelligent" dealer told me that I should not get a 0500 code because its not a diesel code. Although there are a lot of us who are

I know this doesnt help much but I am not getting much help with my 0500 code either

Someone correct me if I am wrong

I took the truck into the dealer and my lift pump had gone south. They told me the codes had nothing to do with it and offered no explanation as to why I had the codes.

I had the same thing happen with the same codes, only thing was the 0500 code was in before the truck died. From searching the forums it seems that the 0500 code may happen if you have the 3 cylinder idle thing working, which I believe was my case. The problem with my truck was my comp box, I took it off and haven't had the truck die since. I am still waiting to get it back, should be here today.

It is possible that you have had a VSS failure sometime in the past and it was either fixed or started working again and the codes were never cleared from the PCM. then when your lift pump failed was the first time you started looking for problems and found the left over codes. .
