I am helping my buddy diagnose his 99 ram. He was driving yesterday and the truck just died. After coasting to the side of the road it would not start. A few minutes later it fired up but would not come above 1100 rpm without sputtering and missing bad. Well i went and picked him up 3 hours away last nite and trailored him back to the coast. The truck is now parked in my shop. Truck has the following codes (236,1693,1698,460,1682,1687,1694,1688,251,252)

Lift pump is good and supplying vp44 with 14 psi (with the help of vulcan). The truck will still start but idles terribly and will not come up to rpms. Makes no difference with edge unpluged. From what i can tell it seems to be a vp44. Is there anything to else to look for before dropping a grand on a new injection pump? Also, where is the best place to find a new pump with reasonable warranties and shipping?

thanks

joe

Buddies truck

99 ram 3500, 5 speed so,4x4, afe intake, strait pipe, drag comp, stealth pump cover,bd ex brake, vulcan big line kit, isspro fuel/boost/egt.

i would also check elec systems/grounds u have codes for voltage and communications failures as well as vp

P0251 (M) Fuel Inj. Pump Mech. Failure Fuel

Valve Feedback Circuit

Problem sensed with fuel circuit internal to fuel injection

pump.

P1688 (M) Internal Fuel Injection Pump

Controller Failure

Internal problem within the fuel injection pump. Low

power, engine derated, or engine stops.

I'd say "VP44"

The other one's look like a bad ground or other Electrical problems. I'd check those out 1st. Moose

voltage gremlins can cause some weird happenings be sure to kill them first like moose said then worst case the 44 codes will still remain.

narrowing it down

ok, did some more work on the truck (the 99) tonite. Cleaned battery terminals (good voltage at both),removed comp completley and installed factory pump cover, removed harness from back of vp44 and terminals look good, tested ohm resistance between ground circut on back of pump and bat ground and found it around 1 (dodge says this is a way of testing the pump i guess), the truck still starts up and idles perfect but will not come above an idle without missing bad, cleared codes numerous times with smarty and narrowed it down to 0251,0252,1693,1688. still getting good pressure to vp44 (15 lbs at idle). any suggestions before i get out my wallet for a new vp?

thanks again

joe

p0252= not listed???

P1688 (M) Internal Fuel Injection Pump

Controller Failure

Internal problem within the fuel injection pump. Low

P1693 (M) DTC Detected in PCM/ECM or DTC

Detected in ECM

A 9Companion DTC9 was set in both the ECM and PCM.

9 times out of 10 you'll beat yourself to death tracing a problem down on the VP trucks and it always comes back to the pump. It's terrible but that will prolly fix your problem.

if these pumps as stock are so weak why havent we come up with a RELIABLE version?? we like to up the output which im told shortens their lives, for a competition truck no biggie, but thats where the only developement is ;or how about an upgradeable modular pump so the defective component could be changed? some of them quit without warning and within a few thousand miles! anybody try modding/adapting a CR system?

the VP is going south---you need another one--end of story--although it may only be the electronics side at this time you still need to replace the whole pump---chris

Problem solved

Well took about 4 hours to get the new vp44 installed, all in all a pretty easy install. That was the problem. No codes so far and truck seems to run good. Thank you all for your help.

DC, Someone in CT is Looking into putting in the CR into a 2nd Gen 24 Valve. I was talking to him at Coffee Night a couple of weeks ago. Mechanically, it should fit, CP3 is the same drive as a VP44, and the head's about the same as far as fitting the injectors. The Valve Cover needs to be change to a 3rd Gen, to fit the Injector Harness. So the biggest Problem would be to fit the 2003 style ECU and Sensors:confused: End Hijacking... .

Joe, good to hear that your are back on the road!! Oo. Moose

first off the oil/coolant passages are different according to getblown5. 9---so this makes it undoable---and even if you could do it you'd be better off with a new CR motor cuz you're gonna dump a crapload of $$ to make it work by the time your done----and if you want power then the new monster vp will be what you want----chris

good lord disregard the above gibberish post--I need to read things better---so the guy is looking into swapping just the pump and going from there--interesting ---keep us posted... ..... chris

easy chris ! :) with innovation comes perspiration! if someone wants to adapt a CR system, ooh ra! from what im hearing the "monster" wont exactly be cheap or avail all that soon so hey why not try! where there's a will there's a way . some people STILL dont think we went to the moon! and diesels are just slow stinky & noisy. two classes of thinking: doers and nay sayers! if he pulls it off, we'll see where u stand after ur 3-4th VP change ! ;)

yea no kidding----I got confused because there was talk in another thread about swapping heads and I didn't read the whole post--shame on me---the monster is available--but you're not going to get one right away--2-4 weeks would be my guess, but that's just a guess--you could luck out though and get one right away if you just happened to call and they had a pump available, but I don't think there's any back stock---

definite cool if the swap get accomplished--will sure open the doors even further for us ORIGINAL VP guys---chris
