Just paid-off the tow guy... My truck has 51,000 miles on it and my extended warranty expired at 50,000 miles... I started my truck at work this evening let it warmup a few and drove off. The truck sounded fine and ran strong, about 3 miles into my trip home I pulled up to a stop light the truck idled for a few seconds then shut-off as if I had turned the key off. I tried to restart it , it started and sputtered for a couple seconds then died and now it doesn't even try to start but it does kick over. The only checks I've made are opening the drain valve on the fuel filter and fuel did come out, I also checked the fuses in the relay box under the hood and found only the 40 AMP trailer fuse blown, I assume from backing my boat trailer into the lake plugged in... My truck is a '97 12V. Please help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am not familiar with the 12valvers, but I would check your fuel pump, then your injection pump. Just because there is fuel in the filter, does not mean the fuel system is in order.

Crack open the fuel line past the filter and turn it over to see if you are getting fuel pressure there, then if possible crack open the injector lines to check for fuel flow there. I know you can do it on a 24v, but I am not sure on the 12v.

12v

I'm no expert on the 12's but there's only one way for a 12v to quit running and that is lack of fuel.

So crack a fuel line at the injector while cranking. Then figure out why no fuel spews when you do.

My guess is that air is getting in somewhere or the shutoff solenoid is malfunctioning.

Good luck.

Hold or wire the fuel solenoid up and see if it will start. If it does not and the fuel system is pumping fuel at the injectors the timing may have slipped. Are you getting any white smoke?

I ran out of fuel...

We'll that's the bottom line, the problem is my fuel guage shows I have about a quarter tank left. Truck is running fine now with a full tank of gas, any ideas what's wrong with the fuel guage?

Thanks for your suggestions they are what lead me to figure out this problem otherwise I would have assumed I had fuel in the tank.

Had a 96 and a 97 that the sending unit it the fuel tank went bad. They both showed less fuel on the gauge than was actually in the tank but it's definitly suspect. I think the Mopar part was around $70. Good luck

Fuel Sender Units going bad is a common problem on the 12Vs.

Keep an eye on your fuel filter for the next few tankfuls... . may have to change it out 2-3 times... . depends on how much junk got picked up from the bottom of the tank. Filters are cheap...

P-7100 pump is not. :)

Glad it was nothing serious!

Didn't think the fuel sender would be off by that much but I guess they can!

That's the beauty of the 12V engines NO ELECTRONICS to screw up!

Hope you get it fixed.
