I had just started the truck and it had been ideling for about 10 seconds when the rpms started to jump around. I tried to level it out but then decided to just shut it down. The truck has an auxilary Carter fuel pump on the frame rail that was put on by the previous owner. Supposedly the original fuel pump died so he installed the second. I know its the in-line pump that went because it is very loud and I can always hear it. After the truck died and I turned the ignition back on, there was no noise. Question... should the original fuel pump that is mounted up by the engine be removed? Is there a block off kit for that? I believe the pusher pump was wired right to the 12 volts and was on all the time as long as the ignition was on. Is this bad for the pump? Are there relays or selenoids that could have went? Finally, how hard a job is this to take on? The truck is in my driveway and I really dont feel like having it towed anywhere. Thanks a lot and sorry for making that so long

The 2000 that my wife has came with a Carter push pump that the previous owner had installed. It did the same thing that you described and yes right in the drive way!

I did replace the push pump... and that pump lasted about 2 weeks. Since the truck had just had a lift pump replaced... I decided to REMOVE the push pump and run the lift pump only...

The truck has not ran better. . The truck has DDII's with an Ez box. I like the way it runs now much more than when it had the push pump. .

If and when the stock lift pump goes... I will decide then if I do a FASS or just call my buddy @ Cummins West and order a stock lift pump and be done with it...

Also I seen you are running a TST PowerMax 3... I have a friend that is running the TST PowerMax 3 with the remote,Mach 2. 5 injectors and a PDR HX35/14 turbo and Wildcat Diesel Fuel Lines... On level 9... the stock lift pump still supplies 11lbs of fuel pressure @ WOT... Sounds weird but I have seen him do it... .

JNeiman, best bet is to remove the the original pump from the front of the truck and replace the pusher pump next to the tank with latest version of whatever our truck calls for from Carter. Contact a local Cummins dealer or do a search here for the part number. Put the new pump where the pusher was mounted. Run a inbound fuel line from the new pump to the fuel filter. Pick up a relay and use what was the hot wire to the original pump as the trigger wire to close the relay, thus powering the pump. While somewhat time consuming, this is not a difficult job. I'm guessing that you don't have a fuel pressure gauge ? If not, put that at the top of your list after you replace the pump.
