My 1999 auto started this morning okay. Drove about 3 miles and truck seemed to start missing. The "missing" got worse and the truck just shut off after another mile. The truck restarted after a few seconds and I drove another mile to a jobsite. I left the truck running for another 4-5 minutes while I checked the construction site. It just sounded funny like it was running on 5 cylinders. I left that jobsite and within a mile the truck shutoff completely. The lift pump runs and fuel comes out of the water sep dump. I got the truck back to my shop and pulled of the first injector line and cranked it over. I got fuel at this location. Any ideas?

Replace the fuel filter... it's cheap and easy, and is the usual cause. If this doesn't work, get back with us and we'll figure something else out.

not good

If it was the fuel pump causing this, then your VP44 is shot as well. Do you have a check engine light on? Check the connections to the VP44. Usually a VP44 failure is coming when you develop a miss, then truck starts to randomly die, then comes total failure. It almost never dies in your driveway, so watch out. It could also be a PCM failure.

It's the crankshaft sensor, it provides timing to the VP44 and will cause a miss and will cause your truck to shut down. Several 1999 have had this problem.

PitBull-where is the crankshaft sensor? How can I know for sure? Is the dealer the only option? Truck is DEAD in my driveway. No warning lights-Only indication was this am-cold start-drove 2 miles had some missing in engine- missing got worse-4 miles total engine shut off-sat for a coupla seconds-restarted truck. It seemed to run okay but only went 200 yards-left engine to idle for 5 minutes-sounded funny like it was missing on a cylinder-left and drove about 1/4 mile and engine shut off completely after really rough period-sounded like it was not getting fuel. Truck cranks over and pumps fuel out of remote fuel filter water dump valve. Upon removing first injector line (front of engine) and turning engine over fuel pumps out of this line.

The CKP is located on the left/rear side of engine block near the starter motor. You will have to remove the starter motor to remove it.

Cummins part # 4002066 around $37

Mopar part # 05015488AA around $67

You will need a 10MM 12 point socket head and the torque when you install the new one is 18ft. lbs.

Do a search using the words crankshaft position sensor for more information. I've never installed one but I understand it is no big deal. Good luck.

Here is what my service manual states (2000)

1. Disconnect both negative battery cables

2. Remove starter motor

3. Disconnect electrical connector at CKP

4. Remove CKP mounting bolt and hold down bracket

5. Pull CKP from engine with a slight twisting action.

6. Discard old CKP o-ring

Installation

1. Install new o-ring to CKP. Apply clean engine oil to o-ring.

2. Clean area around CKP mounting hole.

3. To prevent tearing o-ring. install CKP into engine block using a twisting action,

4. Position hold down bracket and install mounting bolt.

5. Tighten bolt to 18 ft. lbs torque.

6. Install starter motor

7. reconnect battery

Good luck. If this is not it then it might be your VP44. This is a cheap and easy fix if it is the VP44 big $$$.

Bad news-Dealer says injection pump gone. Good News-Dealer will replace under cummins 100000 mile warranty. They are charging me $127 in labor to remove all the aftermarket stuff in the way. Nothing mentioned about the performance enhancer's. Maybe this is my lucky day. :D

Wow that's a new one when the injection pump goes and the lift pump works OK. Like they say anything made by man can break. Glad they are taking care of you.

Apparently there is a disc in the injector pump (concentric) which has been known to fail-dealers mechanic said the has replaced quite a few 98. 5 and 99 24 valvers. He said new pump has different material which will last alot longer.
