Was headed south thru San Francisco. On 19 th ave, the truck just quit. No sputtering, rough running or anything, it just quit like the key was turned off. Still have all electrical, but sounded like no fuel. Called Lorin at Wentland Diesel and he said it sounded like the fuel selenoid. Had the truck towed home, called a friend and he came down and towed the travel trailer home. Got home, checked for engine codes, all is OK there. There was 12 volts at the selenoid with the key on. Checked it for resistance across the coil of the selenoid and there is an open reading, should be 7-8 ohms. Friday night, no place to get the parts tonight.

Anyone had this type problem and was it the fuel selenoid or is there something else I should look at?

Yep. Had exactly this problem. Good guy at Cummins West San Leandro told me what to do. Remove solenoid, take out plunger, reinstall. Truck will now run but you must open hood to shutdown manually. This will get you going fairly quickly. Not alot of fun to get it out but seems like I did all mentioned in less than an hour including phone call. This was in total panic mode however. You'll want to remove throttle cable(s) bracket for access. I installed a manual shutdown that I'm still using after several months. Hope this helps.

Thanks a bunch NOMOFO. You were right on the problem. It turned out that it was the selenoid. Got it out, pulled the plunger and spring, put the housing back in and it fired right off. Now need to rig a pull wire to shut it off till I can get a new part. It is a PIA to get out. had to "modify" an open end wrench. 15/16" fits it good. ground down the head and sides for side clearance and bent it 90 degrees for some clearance to things around it. Didn't have to pull any thing else out of the way.

Glad you got it Stan. Good that you were where you cold create the right tool. I just did mine with tools in the box and moving that bracket really helped. And yep i had a short 15/16 in the box. I rigged up my shutdown cable quite seriously with fabbed brackets and a Morse cable. Rather proud of it but it has an annoying little vibration within the sheath that I haven't solved yet. I would think for a quickie you could maybe get some big game fish line, mono or wire in the 80lb test range or more and get by for a while. I found the solenoids at Quality Fuel Injection in San Juan Bautista for about $70. 831-623-2617. Audy is the guy to talk to. Maybe you could get one of the ones he ordered for me as I like the manual cable so much. ;)

Bob, All the parts houses were closed tonight so I fabbed up a cable along the line you were talking about. Used a hard reinforced piece of rubber hose for a sheath, shoved it thru the fire wall at a grommet. Then fed a piece of stainless steel salmon trolling line through it. Crimped a loop on the ends. Have to pull pretty good to shut down but at least it works for now.

Stan

If you remove the rear pump bracket and cut the top off of it that blocks the access to the selinoid and reinstall, the selinoid can be removed allot easier in an emergency... ... ... Rick

Just got home from the trip I started last Friday. Rick, I was looking at that very thing. I told the wife that I needed to cut a little off the top of the bracket to get to the selenoid better. They sure have it tucked into a hole where its at now! If it was easy to get to, it would only be about 10 minute job instead of a 3 hour PITA.

Now need to find a source that is cheap. NOMOFO, $70 sounds a little on the high side considering what little is there. Will post if I can find a cheaper source. In the meantime, I'll probably clean up the cable system until I get it fixed the right way.

Thanks everyone for the help.

Get the CPL # off your engine and head to your nearest International dealer they are Cummins authorized and have better prices than the Cummins dealer.
