This is an update to my previous post - Truck Dies.

Well it has been a month since they installed the new high pressure fuel pump. So far everything is working great and I haven't had any other problems. I had to wait two weeks for the pump but it was worth it.

So far it seems to have fixed the following problems:

- Dieing and stalling

- The 25-50Rpm surging at idle. What some are refering as idle lope. This was magnified if you ran the truck at 1000rpm to a surge of +/- 100Rpm.

- Sudden acceleration to over 1000Rpm

-The loud diesel knock/clatter that came and went. This seemed louder than 2nd Gen trucks.

- And an added bonus is that the overhead console is more accurate than before. I really don't think the pump had anything to do with this but they did flash the computer while they had it.

The issue with the fuel pump was just a sensor giving out false information. The sensor is inside the pump and non-servicable.

BTW, this one was very difficult to troubleshoot. There are no error codes set. Even with the tech scan tool hooked to the truck and the truck acting up. I watched the scan tool diagnose the truck as fine when is was idleing erratically on its own. Going from 500Rpm - ~1050Rpm and clattering/knocking like something awfull. I belive that they finally had to put a manual gage on the HP fuel side to help diagnose it.

It took over 4 months and several trips to the dealer to get this troubleshot / diagnosed / and fixed. I hope that the info that I gave in this and the other post will help keep others for going through the hoops that I had to go through.

Outstanding. I'm sorry to hear this had to happen to you, and that it took so long to get it fixed, but I believe the information in this post will come in handy in the future. :)

So is this why my truck does the cold surging at high idle and sounds like its missing, also blowing lots of blue smoke, i mean more than normal cold smoke???????????????

Please respond so i can maybe get this problem fixed

Thanks

Dane

P. S. I also have a problem with the truck dying when you get on the throttle hard and step the clutch in.

No your truck does that because it's normal. These things have a high idle mode when cold. And when it's real cold like under 30, they will blow plenty of blue smoke for the first few minutes of start up. that's just raw diesel fuel from poor combustion due to temps.

Mine will have a shlight blue haze when it is real cold out, but I assume that it is the unburnt fuel.

When it wanted to die/stall was only when either idling or returning to idle. You could start up from a red light and let off the throttle and it would die or stall. Driving through a parking lot and go to put on the brakes and the truck would either dies or stall. When it just stalled it would make the most awful clattering/knocking that you ever heard. Then there where the times that you just crank the truck and it die. Or crank it and it would start bucking and clattering.

I guess my truck must be normal because i didnt have the problems you had JWTX. That is a good thing though not having any problems, i still cant get over the idle surging when cold though. To me thats weird even though its normal.

Thanks for the input. I am learning alot on this site guys.

Is this surging idle caused by the manifold heater cycling on and off or is it some computer thing trying to help the truck warm up?

I have a lope during high-idle, but only at the first start-up of the day and only when it's below 30 degrees or so. I theorize that it's insufficient damping in the high-idle algorithm, which makes the system a little unstable when the engine is misfiring and the heater grids keep cycling the load. Just a theory.
