1999 3500 diesel 4x4 just replaced a bad fuel pump and ever since the truck has died for no reason.

1) I have noticed the tach will go to 0 for no reason and the engine will run rough

2) When trying to start the truck I have to "bleed" the fuel filter to get it started

3) engine light comes on

Thanks in advance for any help.

1) Sounds like a bad crank position sensor.

2) Sounds like another bad fuel pump? or maybe the connections or PCM is not giving a signal for the "lift pump" to run correctly, or at the correct time. (Maybe the ECM/PCM does not recognize the engine turning over because of a faulty sensor, therefore does not give the correct signal to the Lift pump to properly prime, or pressure the fuel system.

3) Engine light,, PCM sensing a bad/faulty sensor? (Crank position sensor?) There is a way to "pull" the codes for your truck, although I do not know how.

Hope these help.

Pulling Codes

I think the procedure for pulling codes is turn ignition on-off-on-off-on then hold (not to the start position just to the run position), the odometer will flash the codes. if I am wrong someone please chime in.

truck dies runs rough.

had similar problem after replacing lift pump. i found problem was the plug where it plugs into the lift pump was not pushed all the way in one of the pins was slightly bent. good luck .

Which 'bad pump' did you replace?? Injection or lift pump? In other words, did you replace the injection pump with out checking or replacing the lift pump?

Crank position sensor

I'd start with the crank position sensor. Mine is on the way out.

Same thing, rough idle and tach drops to 0. Check engine light comes on, and the code is crank position sensor.
