... have a fellow member in the area saying his truck seems like it dies... intermittently. First time it happened he was in a parking lot and felt like he hit something, then it would do it while standing still. Also, the tach drops to zero when this happens. . any ideas, possible crank sensor maybe?

I will have to look in a maintenance manual (troublehooting section) that I got with my Freightliner to see if it has any thing listed like the 98. 5 truck is doing.

Well the trouble shooting section hit on a few ideas but not many.

One is he is able to get any DTC (codes), I don't believe on 98. 5 that you get DTCs with the key on-off system you have to use a reader(scan tool).

Is the engine actually stalling or just decreasing in rpms?

Is the tach going to zero before or after the engine stalls?

Yes I have read where the Crank Position Sensor can cause engines to die or not to run. But I think there is a cam position sensor on the engine also which backs up the Crank postions sensor on the early 24 valves.

The ECM could be causing stalling (symptoms) also.

OEM auto trans have high stall torqe convertors on them if the rpm drops to low ( and low rpm protection is not working) this could cause the engine to stall.

This is the only thing I can think of that would make him think he hit something.

These are the only things tha t come to mind now.

I had a couple stutters like that on the wifes 2000, figured out the drain on the fuel/water seperator was not 100% sealed shut and would allow a slight air bubble on occassion, truck would run fine, then all of a sudden nothing, then take back off... also happened on my '99 when I first got it and the LP was dead (and there was a blockage on one of the banjo bolts)...
I would check for codes as step one...
I lost the crank sensor on my 99, it just wouldnt start one day.
also lost it on the wife's 2000, it just went to idle and tach dumped to 0 but kept running and came back to life in a second or two.
Seems like on my '99 there is no cam sensor contributing and there is on the 2000+, but dont quote me on that.

Just got in this morning from my 2 day Oklahoma turn, but last I talked to him, someone came to the conclusion the crank sensor was taking a dump. Said he was going to replace that and see what happens. thanks for the help guys, if I hear something I'll post up!
