Is it the smarty ??? I Never noticed it before but when its super cold out and I remote start it, it will run at normal idle for about 1 min then slowy increase its idle ..... and will go pretty high ... high enough to make me run out side the first time.

Sounds like Goveners on ,,, When you get in you just hit the Accel Pedal and it backs off

Is the Smarty Doing This ?

Sounds like the Smarty. I believe the smarty goes up to 1200rpm for high idle. If you think that makes you run outside, wait until the 3 cyl high idle comes on and you think the truck is going to blow up.

Several other threads on this already, and yes, installing Smarty programming also includes the high-idle feature.

But I have another related question - is there only a SINGLE speed high-idle increase when proper conditions are met, or does high-idle provide a ramping effect on RPM that slowly reduces RPM as the engine warms up?

Mine has only done the high-idle bit twice - the first time the truck started normally, then after a few seconds idle RPM went to 1000 and stayed there for about a block down the street. The second time, idle went to about 900, and then worked it's way down to normal as the engine warmed - weather was not as cold that second time, and I didn't actually drive off until the RPM had already dropped to normal.

All else is normal, engine runs great, no codes - but I haven't heard any other Smarty or other High-idle reports mention a variable idle RPM as the engine warmed...

High idle should be deactivated by stepping on the brake or accelerator pedals... .

mine has never ramped back down and always, if high idle activates, goes to 1250. .

I am trying a smarty out right now. my truck has been idling up. it hasnt done that since I had a superchips programmer. I had the tsb flash done to my truck. it had done it up until the superchips. I never had a chance to have someone with a drb3 reenable the feature. the mads website says the high idle feature is enabled in all smarty modes.

My truck idles up on its own when it is cold out , No smarty or anything else added.

It came that way from the factory. .

very true and the best part is that when you return to stock, you will retain factory high idle... .

my dads idles up high when its cold as well naturally and it don't have no smarty so it must be something cummins engines do to generate heat for cab or something

Does the 02 2nd gen. have the high idle from the factory? I've played with it alot try, but can't get it to work. Figured out how to run the "code scan" and guage check, but not the high idle. Any help?

I've had the Smarty for about a year, and where i live, the high idle engages quite often. Truck starts normally and after about a minute it ramps up to 1200-1250 rpm. If I leave the truck alone, it does not idle back down. I have left it as long as 25 minutes and when I got in, it was still at 1200 rpm and the temp guage was at 180.

I drove mine on the highway today for over an hour and when I got back into the city it was still idling at 1000rpm. It was about 17 degrees out at the time. .

High RPM

Started truck after 30 minute stop, drove 1/10 mile at 10 mph, engine falters, push in clutch, engine RPM goes to what sounds like 2K+, Tack indicates 0 RPM, I shut down engine with ignition key, restart, engine RPM goes to 2K+, shut down and restart again, engine idles normal. Drive truck home. During this event, Cruise control is off and depressing brake peddle made no difference with idle. Engine codes: P1693, P0336, and P1689. This happened yesterday and again today. What is up?

History: LP failed around Sep 05. Dealer said that VP44 and LP were toast and wanted $3. 3K to fix. Drove truck home and replaced LP myself thanks to help from TDR members. Truck has been running great until now. Wife uses it to pull her horse trailer around VA. Recently started running rough and stalling in Feb 07. Replaced fuel filter and realized LP was not working. Replaced LP (block mounted) for the second time. Was running great until yesterday when the above happened. Had repeat today. Don't won't to use it with this intermittent problem. Duh! Didn't see any similar problems posted. Any suggestions?
