you can pull the front axles out without any problems, i just did this in my fathers truck yesterday, in and out no problem. just had to remove the calipers and hub bearings axle slides right out dont even need to pull the diff cover off.
A couple of hints when you're doing this. Either drain the gear oil or jack up the side you're working on to keep the oil from leaking into the axle tube. Be careful when pulling and installing the axles because you could damage a seal. Clean the axle tube so you don't drag dirt into the housing.
